Oil pastels ???

In reading some modeling mags and viewing various forums, I’ve read that some modelers also prefer to use oil pastels when weathering. I’ve purchased a pack with assorted colors however, I found myself stumped when trying to apply them to my models. I would like to know how some of you modelers go about using them and if there is more than one technique. I appreciate your post and comments. Thnx

Thin them into a dirty wash using Turpeniod, but if you are using them over enamels, you’ll need to clear it with an acrylic sealer. The Turpeniod will attack the enamel. If you are doing it over acrylics you’re fine. Paint up a piece of scrap and practice a little before going onto something important.

Hey thanx for the tip,I really appreciate it. However, I do have once small question… What is Turpenoid and how can I find it???

Turpenoid can be found at craft store next to the oil paints and supplies. It is a version of Turpentine, just toned down. It evaporated quickly so you can apply it as a wash and just let dry. Then after a few days of curing you can clear seal it to protect the wash. A small can will last you a long time.

Typically the pastels used in weathering are chalk pastels. This is the first time I’ve heard of anyone using oil pastels. They are more like crayons.
