OFFICAL NO AFTERMARKET Group Build

I have sort of a unique idea. The only thing is that everyone will have a different badge.

Just have everyone take a photo of their finnished build, and post them here, and you can edit it to have the offitial lettering and dates. Just my [2cnts] on the matter, but, you got to admit, it’s unique.

Hey, by any chance, does anyone know how to fade dark olive drab green paint to look more like a truck in OD green that has been used extensively?

I was working on the M-35 I have for the build (which is being built too (alarmingly) easily for a kit of it’s age) and I realized, I don’t have any Testors OD Green paint in the small “rattle-can” spray paint cans, but I think I could get some Krylon OD green paint.

The only problem with it is that the Krylon paint dries very dark, and makes the truck look extremely brand new. The Testors paint worked good, but I don’t have any, and I doubt I could get a trip to any hobby shop for a while (I was there yesterday, but I forgot about the paint)

Also, does anyone know if the chassis and underside of an M-35 is the same color as the rest of the body, or is it flat black?

Any sugestions are open.

I’ll have photos of what I have done so far up later on this evening (hopefully). [No, I didn’t start early. I just made enough progress today to warrent a few in-progress photos]

Hey, saw you needed help with the Badges. I was at work, with some free time, so I thought I’d play around a little bit and here is what I came up with.

Both share the same theme, the movie Seven, starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Since we’re doing a no aftermarket group build, essentially an out of the box build, there was but one line I thought of from the movie that seemed to fit. (I know scratch building technically isn’t OOB but I couldn’t resist)

First one:

Second one, and my personal favorite…

If you haven’t seen the movie, this is all probably irrelevant, haha.

Those look good,oddmanrush.

I’ve never seen Brad Pitt before.

It’s kind of funny, especially considering my 5th grade english/social studies teacher was a big fan of Brad Pitt. (I mean really, really, really big fan)

Well, here’s what I got so far (I didn’t start early. I swear) It is kind of creeping me out. the M-35, dispite the fact that it’s an older kit, is almost literaly putting itself together. I got a feeling something’s going to happen, soon…

Here are the photos (sorry about the poor quality. I only have a Kodak E-Z share C-430.It’s not the best, but it’s the only one I can afford to have)

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

This should be an overview of all the sub-assemblies in their current stages. (I perfer to work on multiple assemblies at one time, so I don’t have a lot of down-time. Mabe that’s why it already looks too good…)

[P.S., ignore that red/yellow caboose in the background. It’s a kitbashing project that has stalled for now.]

Here’s the chassis and drive-system for the truck, after I super-glued the brake lines to the brake system areas on the wheel hubs (It turned out better than I thought)

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Here’s the finnished product for the brake lines. The super glue was an older tube, and didn’t cure fast, but it sure did come out fast[:S] I hope the brake lines are still visible after paint…

For the brake lines, it’s nothing special. It’s just strands of copper filiment taken from an old lamp-cord. I cut it longer than I thought I would need, and then I drilled a fairly deep hole into the mounting area behind the round disc on the axel (the brake hub?) After that, I just super-glue it into the hole, and then I thred it along the chassis, applying a drop of glue at turns and in the mid-point of long strait runs.

(Note, I didn’t have refrences when running the lines, so accuracy is not garunteed. I just did it as I thought the lines were done on the real M-35s. I’ll just claim artistic lisence, if it turns out to be wrong)

Here’s the last photo for this update: the cab. I did some scratchbuilding to place some details that (I think) were fairly common in the M-35s. I shaved off the molded gas/brake/clutch pedals, and made new ones with styrene I got from a $0.98 for sale sign from the hardware store. (Admittedly, I think it was a bad call. the new pedals look bigger than the original)

The channel-like thing next to the driver’s seat is a scratchbuilt rifle rack (more or less accurate) that sort of follows a photo of a rack that Hans von hammer showed me, back in the Real or Model. Episode 2 thred. He said it was used vertically in the M-35 behind the driver’s left shoulder, which was what I tried to replicate.

I don’t have any spare wepons laying around (other than a WWII German K-98) so I’ll have to leave it empty for now. If I get a modern U.S. infantry kit set one day, I’ll salvage one of the M-16s for the rack. It’s not the best, but I have not scratch-built with styrene before. Man I have a lot to learn with that.

The thumb-print on the floor of the cab was sort of a mess-up on my part. When I went to glue the side of the cab/hood into place, I didn’t realize that glue came up through the seam, and onto my thumb. I’ll need to buff that out before painting.

Here we go!

I didn´t like the antennas…

More to come.

Ok, so I started today. Good times so far.

Here’s the kit:

The cockpit is terribly void of any detail, so I did my best in adding some…

So I shaved down the top of the ejection seat. It looked too high compared to all the reference photos I could find. I also removed a nub on the right hand side of the pit, which didn’t seem to belong and its where I am going to place the d-ring ejection handle. You can also see I’ve added seat cushions…

Here you can see I’ve added the ejection handles, one over head, one between the knees and the one on the right of the cockpit…

Here I added some wear to the seat cushions, you can also see the wire I added to the seat…not sure what its for but I saw it in pictures!..

The last picture for today, you can see I added some harnesses…

Thanks for looking! Don’t know when I’ll get back to it. Comments and criticism is certainly welcome!

I’m going to check the stash tonight, see if I can come up with something suitable. This one looks fun.

Railfan, Trabi and, Oddmanrush your starts are looking great and a bunch of scratch building going on with them too [Y][Y]

Oddmanrush thanks for the badge idea I will resize it to badge size and post it on the front page to see how it works. Anyone else have an idea to share for a badge ?

A couple of good starts here!

Railfan, I don’t think those pedals look too big. Even if they are, they’ll be disguised a little inside the cabin.

Trabi, well done on those antennas! They certainly are a vast improvement over the kit option.

Vetteman, glad you like the badges. If some one can come up with something better, by all means go for it. Those were just a little something I came up with in my free time at work.

Keep up the good work, hopefully we’ll see some more action from others soon!

Thanks, Oddman.

I’m convinced that the pedals are too big, but I’m going to try my best to hide them.

I have a WWII German soldier, posed to look like he is leaving a vehicle (he’s the driver of Tamiya’s Kubelwagen) I think I may modify him to look more like a modern American soldier, and I’ll place him as the driver, if there is enough time left. I would like to do it both to make the cab look more interesting, and to hide the pedals (somewhat) more.

I’m still on the hunt for that ever-elusive M-16. I don’t know, but I may be able to modify that K-98K I mentioned earlier to look more like an M-14 or an M-21. All I would need to do is scratchbuid a magazine for it, and re-paint it, since it will be in the rack anyway, so the top shouldn’t be visible.

Railfan I’m sure if you really need an M-16 and would rather save that K98 for when you really need it, some one on this forum may be willing to send you one. Otherwise, I believe there are several companies that make modern weapons and accessories that are easily purchased online. I don’t think that would count as aftermarket, but I don’t make the rules [H]

Hey Randy! I would like to join up if you don’t mind. I’ve got a kit that could use a little scratch building here and there.

PM Model 1/48 SIAT 223 Flamingo. The little beauty you always see in the Squadron flyer for four dollars!

I know I’m already up to my neck with my project for your NMF group build but this little thing should be quick and fun. What do ya say? [;)]

Don’t worry, Oddman. I’m O.K. with modifying the K-98K into am M-14 or an M-21.

I don’t do a lot with figures (I only build them if they come in kits, and I’m pritty bad with painting them) so the loss of a rifle isn’t that big a deal.

The soldier who will be missing it would enjoy his upgrade to an MP-40

Hey Jeremy,

I had to buy that very same kit after seeing it in the squadron catalogue for four dollars. What version are you building?

Seems like I buy one of those kits everytime I place a Squadron order, Andrew. I’ve got quite a few sitting around… time to build one! I think I’m going to do a civilian version in German registration. Maybe paint her up with a nice natural metal and two color striping. [Y]

EDIT

Check out this beauty!

That would be cool to see something new, but gosh that plane is ugly.

[:O] No sir!

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, 'cause I find it to be a rather attractive little plane. [;)] [:D]

Nope not PE, I use guitar string cut to length. I have some Pegasus kits which are limited run plastic kits and they require some simple fabrication of parts (templates provided). This GB seems like it was made to give me an excuse to build one of these kits. [:)]

I’ll join in, but will need a few days to go through the kits and select one.

Jmabx your build is in and welcome. I like the aircraft my self, it kind of reminds me of the Grumman Tiger, used to fly one and loved the bubble top canopy on it and she wasn’t a bad flying plane either. The only other one I flew with the bubble top was the Piper Tomahawk, I hated that one, was a flying junkyard.
