Oddball's Tank - Kelly's Heroes

Anyone know where we might find some good still photos of Oddball’s Sherman? Also what is the best way to build the loud speaker?

Here’s an OK pic of a model.

Hope this Helps.

David

There are surprisingly few images of the tanks in Kelly’s Heroes on the web. :frowning:

Here’s a still from the movie when Kelly’s bunch is loading up on the remaining Sherman:

One continuity goof I’ve noticed while watching the film is that Oddball’s tank changes from shot to shot at times. It’s particularly noticeable during the “Burning Bridges” travelling sequence/montage right after the scened shown in that photo. The tank in the sequence goes from having no fenders/sand shields to having them, then back to not having them.

Also, when Oddball first shows Kelly his tank, the loudspeaker is on the left side of the turret. At some point in the film, it moves to the left side of the turret (and, IIRC, disappears entirely at times).

A color still from the same scene as above:

I’ll have to study the movie a little bit more. Last weekend when I watched it my 14yr old son got up from the computer and watched it with me. He is starting into modelling, mostly Warhammer 5000, but also some aircraft (F-22 is his favorite a/c).

I should get my replacement turret in about a week or so and then I’ll get to work. First I have to finish off some other projects including another movie tank, Lullabelle, the M3 Lee from the old Bogart film “Sahara”. I am about ready to finish the interior detail on her. On one of my last viewings of that movie I saw an additional instrument mounted on a raised mount for the panel. I need to add that. I plan to include 10 figures with that diorama, so far only one is finished, the British Captain. Finding a good Italian figure in a bustina cap is hard without going all the way to Italy for it!

The loudspeaker on Oddball’s tank is typical bell shaped. I have to search craft stores and our own broken Christmas decorations for one to use. My mount will be on the left side, as that is how it is predominately shown in the movie. As I mentioned earlier, the tank number is USA 301101. The placement of the star in the front of the tank on the transmission cover seems odd. That would have been a great place to put the cropsshairs on.

Here’s a link to the quotes I have been using.

Oddball: We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone’s knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in reserve in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris… or maybe even New York. Then we can move in and stop them. But for 1.6 million dollars, we could become heroes for three days.

Whats the best kit to use to do this conversion?

Heeeeeey crapgame. love that movie. oddball was the greatest! “A hero is some type of weird sandwich. not some nut that takes on three tiger tanks!”[:D]

Modelbuiler - I am going to use Dragon’s kit (DML 6255) for a M4A3 76(w) and replacing the turret with Tank Workshops Late M4 75mm turret (TWS 0040) and their M4 M34A1 Mantle (TWS 077). At first I was going to use the Trakz High Bustle Turret (TKZ0115), but my source didn’t have it available. Either turret would convert that kit back to the right vehicle as discussed before. The Dragon kit comes with an aluminum barrel of the correct type and the VVSS suspension.

As for other models, Tamiya has a M4A3 with a 75mm gun (just need to change the barrel) and Italieri has a M4A3 76(W). I just don’t know how old these kits are and how accurate. I am staying with the Dragon kit as it was already in my stash and I had no obvious plans (diorama theme) for it. Other than that, I know we have some experts on Shermans here in the forums that would tell you the most accurate way to go.

Good luck.

I have the old Tamiya M4A3 in the closet and it is a fairly decent kit. I watched Kelly’s Heroes last night and noticed that the tracks on Oddball’s Sherman did not have growsers, the Tamiya tracks do. Is there an AM company other than Fruil that sells the proper tracks? How do you plant to come up with the proper registration numbers?

Hey, FYI: here’s another thread in this forum discussing Kelly’s Heroes started by 88Mike back in November, '06. It talks about the tracks for the T-34/Tiger.

Modelbuilder;

As for replacement tracks other than Fruil theere are some options, AFV Club has suits for Shermans. There may be other choices, some of our more knowledgeable Sherman experts could help there. I am about average in my knowldege of this material. I have made up a suit of the AFV Club product (T51-track) for my old M4A3E2 Jumbo and it wasn’t that bad. There were fit problems around the front sprocket so you may need to get the AFV Club VVSS suspension set as well. Check with someone more knowledgeable on these products.

Archer Transfers has a good range of US armor numbers which is what I was going to use.

Remember that you will need a 76mm barrel as well. These are retrofitted guns in turrets meant to house 75mm guns.

A Kelly’s Heroes Group Build – great idea!

For the T-34/Tiger, check out Militar Farzeug a few years ago, 1/2004 has a photo, and there are better ones in other issues of the period. The T-34 Tigers (assuming they’re the ones built for the movie) seem to still be in working order and appear in reenactment performances at the Bahna armor show in the Czech republic.

Cheers,
