While working on the TD Cockpit set, I dropped a small bottle that attaches to the rear bulkhead. To no avail I searched for these 2 parts. While working on my 1/48 B-17G I dropped the supercharger tube. I looked & couldn’t find it.[:O][xx(] I even went as far as trying the pantyhose over the vacuum nozzle trick. [:I] Today I decided to tell the Carpet Monster to Leave MY parts alone or he’d be sorry for doing so… Well, I found the parts behind my work bench!! WooHoo[banghead] I guess I didn’t pull it out fer enuff. That, or my talk with the carpet Monster did some good[:D]
Been there, but as successful. My bench is attached to the wall so I can’t pull it out (the bench that is…) I also have concrete floor but I still loose parts as they can it the floor and launch in any direction. This recently bit me while working on my 1/48th Hasegawa A-4E/F I was putting the instument bezel (PE) on and it fell to the floor. You think I could find it? I looked for days and even recruited more and younger eyes to no avail… The said thing is the day before I dropped a seat belt buckle and found that, go figure…[:O]
The carpet monster in my room (mid 70’s shag, lol) recently ate an entire 1/72 Mig-15! My father knocked it down…he did not see what direction it flew, and it hasnt been seen since! Its been a week and the mission has changed from Search and Rescue to Recovery. Still no sign of the Mig. I guess it might be time to clean my room, lol!
The monster has eaten plenty of parts in the past. But this is the first time I have lost an entire aircraft.
Want the part back? Scratch build a new one and install it. The old part will show up in 5 minutes or less.
Qmiester is right…
I guarantee that the carpet monster will return your missing bit a few minutes AFTER you scratchbuild yourself another one…
I hate that…
I have a nice, bright positionable light on my desk I can bend to shine on the carpet. I have gotten pretty good at finding even the tiniest things. I once found a screw I dropped from a motorcycle kit! It was about 4mm long!!! I was impressed with myself. I lost a tire and wheel to a car the other day, but that wasn’t any big deal, i just put the kitten down in the general area I thought it was in, and left the room for about an hour. When I came back, there was the wheel and tire, in kitty’s mouth. Good kitty, well, at least this time anyway! Stupid cats are good for something I tell you I found… anyhoo[censored][soapbox][:(!][B)]
My carpet once ate an entire Spitfire as well (1/48). I swear, I couldn’t find it, for 2 weeks, until I found it wedged between a bean bag (a huge one at that) and the floor.
This is why I put ceramic tile in my new hobby room. I’m sure parts will still disappear under the trim or something though.
My carpet monster is very well trained. It will only let me find missing parts after I have stratched a replacement and finished the model!
I am pretty lucky, I have a very short fiber space rug under my workbench. I would love to take it up and just have the wood floor, but its WAY to cold in the winter! White carpet would help make things more visible, but I tend to get so muddy at work, it would be brown after a few days [:D]
At least the carpet monster returns the parts eventually. My son, who is autistic, took an interest in my 1/48 Hasegawa Ju 87 D - he ate the port landing gear. He is none the worse for the wear, the palne however, looks a little chewed up - no pun intended.
Cheers,
Eric
I too have a concrete floor under my bench and it amazes me how the conrete gremlins can make a plastic piece bounce farther and in a direction I would never suspect. Must be some sort of incantation you can say to supress these critters. Joe
I droped a small steel rod on my carpet last week. I found it right away. I placed the rod on my work desk, reached for the glue and could’t find the rod. I know it is on my work desk but with all the clutter, I still haven’t found it. I had to make another so I could repair the nose gear on my F-4.
While searching for the rod on my work desk, I did find a PE HUD mount, I thought the carpet monster had eaten. Maybe the desk and carpet are teaming up to make me go out of my mind.[%-)]
My carpet is the same way… low fiber & needs to be replaced but, for the same reason I haven’t switched to wood. I’ve been thinkin’ of getting some sort of heavy plastic matting to put down. Like ya see in offices around desks, etc…
I’m surprised how quick this thread took off! I had to make an emergency run to Reno after posting this… (I also got ripped off by a gang of 1-armed robbers!![xx(][B)] while there) … I was waiting for payday to try and get stuff to make & pour my own resin castings when the Carpet Monster & I had our talk… I am sure that the parts would’ve appeared had I made replacements[:)]
It’s A Conspiracy I Tell YA!!! I think they might even be in cohoots with the Government![V]
This can easily be avoided by chaulking the gap between the tile & trim /baseboards. (also works great on that draft too)[:D]
I have thought of a way to stop the carpet monster and the concrete grimlins. A floor coating made double sided tape! Soft and spongy under the feet, and if a part falls, it stops as soon as it hits the floor! [(-D]
Ed. you know I can’t resist getting in a cheap shot on you after the bottle throwing comments! It helps if you CAULK the joint under the trim! I don’t see how chaulking them would help keep out drafts [:P]
eizzle, in older houses it does help since they were “slapped together” just like those models youu’ve been doing[(-D][(-D] and use so Much seam-filler to “cover” your haste[:-,] oh, I do throw Bottles but, at least I never Dropped 'em[}:)]
