O-1 Bird Dog 1/48th Scale

I’m interested in building a 1/48th scale bird dog and I notice lots of retailers have decal sets and resin upgrade kits but I for the life of me I can not find anyone that has the model kit or even who it is made by. Does anyone have any info on a 1/48th O-1 Bird Dog kit and who it is or was made by?

Yes, there is a 1/48 Bird dog. I believe the producer is Smer, an Eastern European manufacturer.

Charlie,

The Smer kit is actually ~1/50 scale, and very old and flashy. The only true 1/48 Bird Dog that I know of is the one by Model USA. Here’s a review of the kit:

Thank You, I found one at OldModelkits.com and I wish I never found that site. There are so many models I bought when I was a kid for next to nothing only to find them selling for hundreds of dollars each today. I could spend a fortune at that site.

Before you break out the credit card, check Ebay. Many of those kits can be had for cheaper there.

Plus some have been re-released as new kits so also check your favorite hobby shop too. I found this out with Monogram’s 1/48 T-28 kit.

Thanks Dave. I went ahead and bought the O-1 bird dog from Old Model Kits for 38.00. That wasn’t too bad being no one makes it anymore. I also picked up an old Revell 1/72nd scale CH-54. I do keep an eye out on ebay though.

That’s not too bad at all. The Bird Dog isn’t on Ebay anyway. I’ve been looking myself.

If I am not mistaken, check with Squadron… I thought they had found a quite a few boxes full and they were to be put out for sale!!

No Joy with Squadron. Their search engine pulls up a big goose egg on anything from Model USA. Nothing comes up from anyone with a search for “0-1” or “Bird Dog” either. [:(]
