My wife and I bought our first house on Halloween, and we’ve been working during almost every spare hour to get it ready to move into by Thanksgiving. When I do have time to model, I’m too dang tired.
On the plus side, once we’re finally moved it, I’ll have a lot more room for my hobby that I do now in the apartment. [8D]
We put drywall up this past weekend in our new bedroom. So I got to tell everyone at church on Sunday how I spent the weekend screwing. [}:)]

There are six rooms in the house: two bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom. Everything but the kitchen and bathroom is paneled, and God is it ugly! There’s a slate roof and a full basement.
Since settlement, we’ve contracted with somebody to make repairs on the roof (they’re half done), and another person to install a steel door for the basement (to the outside) and put down a new kitchen floor. The door’s installed, and the new floor in the kitchen will be installed this week. In the meantime, we’re hoping to finish painting the kitchen this week.
We’ve ripped out the paneling in the master bedroom and found something interesting. Under the paneling was some sort of cardboard wallboard, and under that was nothing but studs and exterior wall. The exterior wall is made of wood siding scavenged from railroad box cars – we could still see the stenciled-on numbers! We have vinyl siding, so the exterior wall is longer exposed directly to the elements. The studs, which measure a true 4" x 3" look like they’re actually the cross pieces from telephone poles. We have some photos documenting this.
Our plan is to eventually put drywall up on all the interior walls, but that’s going to take a while.
There’s a neat little enclosed balcony off the master bedroom. I think I’m going to make that my hobby room as soon as I can get it insulated and heated somehow. [:D]

Sounds like an interesting house! How old would you esimate it to be? Might be a candidate for HGTV!

I no how the no ime to model makes you feel. Finals are drawing near and I only come here while working on projects, paper in one window this in the other. Keeping me from stressing.
Drew, I’m in the same boat (except it sounds like you home has a bit more character than mine). We bought our new place in July and I haven’t been able to work on any models since. Lots of extra jobs to try to get done before winter sets in (fence, lawn, deck, insulating garage, etc, etc, etc…). All my model stuff is in the basement and still packed away. I’ve made pretty good progress at sorting out all the extra ‘storage’ items from the move, so I think I’m pretty close to getting my bench setup soon.
My problem is that my basement isn’t developed and it’s kinda cold down their now. I’m also trying to figure out how we’re going to develop the basement long-term so I can drill a hole through the wall for a spray booth. I’d like to just get the exterior walls and insulation up (in the basement), but alas the bank account has run dry…

Crazy, isn’t it? Our house was built in 1920.
I’ll probably move my stuff to the basement eventually, but I’m defintely going to finish it first – something that’s probably a couple of years away. I also know about running out of money. I happy we’ve ben able to do as much as we have.
In the meantime, my wife and I are relatively newly married and we’re still kidless, so I’m probably going to set up in the 2nd bedroom for the winter.
This is our first house, and while I had an idea that it would take a lot of work to get it ready to move into, I had no idea just how much work it would be.

I know just how you feel. My girlfriend and I bought our brand new house on 12th Dec last year,complete with expansive ,empty, dusty ,barren,sloping ,unfenced,undrained,untamed backyard.Since then every weekend and after work goes into concreting,paving,draining,wallbuilding,garden shed erecting ,etc,etc.Damn yard still looks wild and untamed,and I’m a horticulturist and carpenter who is supposed to know what he’s doing!
Anyway, doesn’t leave much time for modelling,usually just a half hour or so here and there.Takes me forever to finish anything.Maybe when I retire in 25 years I’ll have more time !

I forgot to ask,do you have lots of renovation /lifestyle /gardening shows as we have in Australia? People keep getting inspired and getting into trouble by trying to do more than they’re able to do and have to get a team of TV professionals in to fix their stuff ups.

Sounds like you may want to put in a call to “Trading Spaces”. LOL I, too have been through that game, but it was the opposite. I fixed up everything to sell my home. What a nightmare. At least you should be settled before the holidays. My inlaws are moving a week or less before Christmas! Gee that ought to be fun. I can hardly wait…[:(][xx(]

See,the trouble with living in the sub tropics is that you don’t get a season of ice and snow that you can rest up and watch tv lifestyle shows in.Nitetimes only for that. Even in Winter where I am I can’t use the weather for an excuse to stop working outside.LOL
I’m trying to finish a courtyard project before Christmas before my family arrive but don’t think I’ll make it.Running out of weeks.

Yeah. We’ve been blessed with pretty good weather. Not too hot or too cold to work on the house. We move in later this week.

What city are you in by the way? I was curious since you said you have been having good weather. It’s been in the low 60’s here in the San Francisco bay area during the day, but it’s been down to 40 at night.

That’s the truth.
Harrisburg, PA. 60s during the day and 40s at night is wonderful weather! I’m one of those guys that likes things a bit cooler than most. Low 70s is my ideal. We’ve had highs between 45 and 60 for the past couple of weeks, but it’s gone down as low as 32-33 or so at night. If it gets too cool, the furnace kicks on, but I’d prefer to have things cooler when I’m working than be sweating my butt off. This weekend was beautiful, and we were able to open up the windows to vent the drywall dust – that horrible by-product of all the sanding I did.
I spent most of this weekend painting. I kept thinking that, since I get good results on my models with an airbrush, I should get one of those big airgun spray painting thingies for the walls and ceilings of my house. [:D]

My model has dropped of seriously after our getting our first house and having children. I’ve completed one kit in 10 years only to have it damaged after a move to my second house. I’m on the verge of completeing several kits now and hope to have them done by the end of the year. Trying to stay awake to model after the family goes to sleep has been a real challenge. Thank God for the internet sites like this one and peoples’ personal sites for giving me motivation to keep on trying.
