Not a plane but it still flies

Looks sharp! So what is it and what scale?

Really nice HK! [tup] Good weathering on the launcher.

I’ve had the nich to get myself one of these. That just made me order one. My visa thanks you [:-^]

Thanks, guys!

It’s the 1/35 Trumpter SAM AA missile. I’ve been stalled on it for a couple of months now, going through a bit of a modeling “drag”, I guess one could say. A friend of mine built the kit and I always admired it everytime I saw it. Wanted one myself so when I found it in the local HobbyTown I picked it up.

I found tons of grainy pics online for refs but still shot from the hip for the weathering. I figured that if some third world country was operating it in the desert somewhere they probably didn’t take care of it very well, as long as it fired, so I beat it up some and added some rust and scratches to show the thirty or so years it may have been since it was new. Kept the SAM rather clean though. I didn’t imagine it had been around as long as the launcher.

I debated trying to put a rusty burn stain on the deflector as evidence of a launch sometime in the past but decided against it. 1) I wasn’t sure I could pull it off and 2) I guessed if they did fire a shot they would have repainted the deflector at least to prevent a lot of extra corrosion. I’m glad it’s done but I’m also glad to be moving back to planes. Fighters, to be more precise. I’m commited to two different GB’s and need to get started on them.

Get one, Drew. They look cool in the case!

That looks great. I think the weathering is just spot on. Very nice job.

[#ditto][tup]I really like the weathering, just enough, not to much.

Cheers, Dave

You posted a surface to air missle in the aircraft forum, It’s that kinda like post a A-10 in the armor forum[}:)][:D].

It looks really good, Like the weathering on the lanucher. I saw one of these at the LHS myself and had though about getting it as I fly HPR rockets as well. after seeing yours built I may just do that. Nice work.

Hey Troy, nice to see ya back on the building scene, even if it is a aircraft killer. Very nice job on the Sam. Is that a Sam 2?. Very well built and the weathering loks spot on. Great job.

Steve

Very nicely done! Excellent job on the weathering, subtle but effective. Just don’t point that thing at any of my planes! [:O]

[swg]

Good job. The detail and weathering looks great.

The SA-2 Surface to Air Missile, NATO codename “Guideline”, Russian name, Dvina, is undoubtedly the most produced, most used, most deployed SAM in the world. North Viet Nam used it to shoot down several hundred US aircraft (including 15 B-52s) during that war and the Egyptians used it to shoot down several Israeli aircraft during their various wars. It has been used/deployed by all of the former Warsaw Pact countries, many Middle East countries as well as China, (they also manufacture the thing). It has been deployed around the world from the severe cold of the Arctic, to the wet jungles of Viet Nam, to the dry deserts of Egypt & Syria and everything in between. Those varying conditions and length of service would make almost anything realistic from brand spanking new to terribly weathered and aged.

The NASM at Dulles/Udvar-Hazy center has a restored one in pristine condition on its transporter and the USAF museum at Dayton also has one.

That is a very nicely done SAM-2. As a Viet Nam vet combat aircrew member, I HATE those

things. All that build needs to make it complete is a FAN SONG radar van.

Ray

Thanks for the kind words guys!

The irony of an a/c killer in the a/c forum was not lost on me and I almost put it in the armor section. As for the radar, I considered putting the kit on a base and adding the FAN SONG radar. I thought it would be a very eye catching and interesting display. After checking around and not finding a kit of the radar (and terrified at the thought of scatching one) coupled with the sheer size of the finished product I dropped the idea.

Now, where did I put that SSGB P-39?

nice build shooter… having seen the real thing a couple times (sorry no pics to share) I can say as far as weathering is concerned on the launcher you’ve nailed it though the missle could use a lil work. It looks like it just rolled off the factory floor. The missles, in the European theater, were often stored in dark damp bunker and the access panels rusted noticably. In dryer desert climates the sun faded the paint pretty quickly. In both places I’ve never seen one outside (forgive my language) not covered in bird s&!t. Ive actually seen crews taken to shooting at birds using them as a perch with pellet guns and these missles had live warheads!!

Not to take it too far off topic, Hkshooter or yardbird may know. Is this the type of missile that shot down powers U2? It looks like the one they showed in the video I watched on this not too long ago.

I believe that is correct. What most people don’t know is that normally these were launched in pairs in case one missed or malfunctioned for some reason. IIRC, it took seven of these to bring down Powers’ plane.

Standard procedure for Russian missile engagement was to fire salvos of three, (from a six position site). They could fire more or less, depending on circumstances. Vietnamese normally fired two at a time, frequently from a 3 or 4 position, field deployed site.

Yes, Gary Powers’ U-2 was shot down by a tremendous salvo of SA-2 missiles. They didn’t actually get a direct hit, but one or two missiles detonated close enough that the shock wave severely damaged the tail of the U-2 and it pitched violently enough to break the wings off. In reality, the U-2 was a pretty delicate aircraft. The best guestimate is that the Russians fired about a dozen missiles. At least one of them hit a Mig-19 that was chasing the U-2 and destroyed it. There was a flight of 4 Mig-19s on a routine training mission when they were ordered to go after the U-2 and destroy it at all costs. One was shot down by the SA-2 and two more ran out of fuel and the pilots ejected.

Regardless of the forum you post this, it’s great work once again. The weathering seems to be your trademark “not too much, not to little” which is always subjectove but personally I like your taste in this category. The SA-2 definately belongs in the Aircraft forum.
