I bought my compressor second hand from ebay and to be honest didnt pay much for it, it has always made a fairly loud rattling noise which I thought to be normal. I spoke to someone today and gave them an impression of the noise and they said “that sounds f***ed mate”, what do you guys think? Can I fix it or is it FUBAR?

First I’ll assume you checked everything visible to mack sure it was tight.
So that leaves the “rattling” noise to be internal.
That could be three things that I can think of quickly off the top of my head.
Two sets of bearings would be behind the black end caps of the motor. Another set would be directly under the orange/red cylinder head down in-line with the center of the motor.
The piston & piston ring(s) would be under the orange/red cylinder head.
The connecting rod will be below that.
With that said, try to identify if the rattle is coming from any of those areas. If so, then the cost and availability of parts becomes an issue. You might find it feasible to purchase another compressor and mount it to your tank.
Or, maybe there is an oil fill hole and it needs some?

Tecs, I work at a place that sells compressors. If the said comp is an oil bath pump(lubricated), there may be hope. Could be journal or rings. If it an oiless pump…your buddy is right.
I would venture a guess based upon the pic, that the compressor in question is an oilless compressor (I don’t see any provision for an oil resevoir).
I had one of these a little while ago, and I found mine made a little bit of a rattling noise. I solved it by taking the Cap off the top (by the handle) and using some silicone to stick it down. It has a plastic screw type thing but mine was never able to be nice and tight on its own.
