I use MM Schwartzgrau.
For the tank, Panzer Schwarzgrau '39-'43 #2094 will work. For the crew, they wouldn’t have had gray uniforms but rather black as standard issue for the panzer corp units.
I’ve got an extra jar of German Grey I can send you if you want it.
I’ve actually seen someone using MM’s Gunship Grey for german armor.
You can use MM schwartzgrau, but in my opinion it is way too dark. You can either try to lighten it or use a lighter grey and pre-shade it with black.
I agree with you. After weathering it will lighten up or you could go with a lighter shade.
It depends on what you are trying to depict. Period photos show that the Panzerschwarzgrau is very dark, almost black, but with weathering, dust, etc. it can look substantially lighter.
This shot, from Achtung Panzer, is a case in point.
Notice the color shade of the panzer crewmen’s uniforms (black) vs. the shade of the vehicle itself.
That would be me; it’s a pretty close match to “weathered” Panzer grey. I painted my 1/24th Tamiya Tiger I that color & it looked okay.
I have another option - I recently built an AFV club Stuka Fuss and a tamiya stug III. The box art on both showed a grey color with a very bluish tint. With just a little lighteneing, Tamiya FIELD BLUE reproduced the color in the art. I think it looks great, but afficianados might want think me a heretic. I recently poainted a Tiger I with this base color and ten did a whitewash over it. It looks pretty dang good to me!
I got the paint today Tabasco, thanks so much for all of your effort.
My tank is going to be grey very soon now!
There was a lot of variation in the German colors. One unusual property is that the color got darker with age, especially the yellow. It wasnt really paint at all. It was a paste. Some say it came in a tube like toothpaste, others say it came in a tin like shoe polish and it was cut in the field with diesel fuel or kerosene.
Depending on what the ratio was that it was mixed effected the color.
Not a problem. Did they put it in a big enough box or what?[:)]
