Kuda, I know you may be able to help me with this question and I welcome anyone else’s imputs.
As you may know I’m doing a book on “Door art of the A-10” and I would like to tie the lack of nose art in conflects following Desert Storm to the move to the door. The only nose art (I know of) on A-10s during Kosovo, Bosnia, OEF and OIF was done by the Canjun from Naw-lin’s during OEF. I have a few questions…
I’ve tried to get pictures of this art from the PA office in Naw-lins’ and a couple of other contact…no luck with any of them! Do you have any contacts who might be able to point me in the right direction?
Some ideas:
Run an ad in the base newspaper there; you’d be surprised how many Crew Chiefs take pictures of their baby and any art on it, and would love to see their bird in a book…
Current Air Combat Command regulations prohibit any artwork on the outside of the aircraft (save the ‘Let’s Roll’ officially designated artwork… one per squadron).
I know that the 354th Fighter Squadron here at Davis Monthan did a six month stint during OIF, but I’m not sure if you want to include them in your book.
Hope this helps!
I’ve been doing B1 nose art for 10 years- here’s the deal- Any nose art that you see on the fighters was done in theater, and will be removed when they get stateside.
ACC Does allow nose art, but it is restricted to bombers and tankers only. That is why the A-10 has “door art”
C-130 Crew Chief has some great advice about running an ad, you’ll probably get bombarded with pictures.
The “Lets Roll” sticker, is a deviation approved by the commands. If you need any help, contact me here, sbarba2616@rushmore.com (the contact info on my page does’nt work, because I quit paying the bill, lol)
I’ll be sure to let you guys know when/if it get published. I’ve already decided if I don’t get it published I will make a special section on my website for it.
EC-130chief/mig-17, thanks for the imputs but, I have all the commands regs and know about who and when nose art is allowed. The thing is ACC wrote their reg to include the A-10 door in their definition where the other commands regs don’t define the door as nose art, so it allowed.
During OEF/OIR nose art would have been allowed and the cajuns took advantange of this and are the only unit to do so as far as I known. That’s the story and images I’m trying to pin-down.
I have thought about placing an ad in all the A-10 bases papers and may still do so. I have a friend who is a professional avation photo. going to NO next week and he’s going to see what he can dig-up, I just thought Kuda could give me some insight.
Hey Dice;
When I was there the 23rd had their Teeth, the NO folks got permission from AFRC to do nose art but I think they wanted the Reserves A-10’s to have the Barksdales faces but the 702nd pilot & ground crews had another idea, as for the 442nds plane they where left alone except 79-0164 it had a pencilled in Barksdale nose for a few weeks until the Cheif of Maintenance informed the folks from NO to leave the 442nds planes out of their plans until the 442nd got the okay from AFRC personally, then they where done up like the Barksdales noses when we got back to El Jaber AB, Kuwait and then the NO’s planes where done up like BD’s planes at the same time as the 442nds was, the planes that had been done up where 79-0089,79-0093, 79-0111, 79-0238 if my memory serves me well, 111 is Cajans, 238 had the painted version of the BD’s planes (the rest where done with a big decal), 89 I think is the one with the Flag, 93 had some Steamed Shrimp and all of which where painted on with acrylic paints that the “artist” brought from home
