I was currious about the Hurricane MkII PRU posted by Gregers. Is it just the photo, or is the blue colour really that light? The only RAF PRU blue I know is quit a bit darker . I am aware that some A/C were not really “standard”, but I haven’t seen that shade before. I’m sort of into PRU A/C and I am hoping to do a Spit and Mossie before too long. Any good references? Thanks.
Hi Sisu, i built the model and got the colour from a single side view drawing in a book (when i remember which i’ll let you know)from what i remember the prop spinner looked to be pru blue and the rest was in this light blue colour, it has a small flat sided bulge beneath the fuselage just behind the wing trailing edge that ( i asume )houses a camera which can’t be seen on this photo. the drawing in the reference book had the serial number on which i havn’t put on the model yet, i’ll look it up fpor you when i remember which book its in.

Hi again, by some miricle i found the book almost straight away. it is Aircraft of WW2 by Bill Gunston. the model isn’t that acurate against the drawing in the book. the blue is darker but doesn’t look as dark as pru blue and according to the book it should be a MK1. the passage beneath the pic states.

Thanks Greg. Photos of operational wartime A/C always look like one-of-a-kind anyway and I am sure that there were all sorts of liberties taken. The Navy complained about the quality of its paint during WWII and no doubt there were problems with the absolute consistency of colour given the technology available and being produced under less than ideal conditions of war. Your book may not be wrong. At any rate, the Hurri looks good and it looks right. It would be really neat to have a wide range of colour for the various PR A/C. By the way, if you are looking for a good MKI kit, look no further than the Hasegawa 1/48. One of the best. The interior is the best out of the box I have seen, and the all other details are as good. I am about to start the Finnish AF version from the early war. Really interesting camouflage. Thanks again for your help.
Hi Sisu, thanks or the complements on the Hurri, you are right about the differing shades suplied to the military, i owna nato green landrover and it needed one of the doors re-painting, got myself a tin on nato green (from an army surplus suplier too) and its a completly diferent shade and hasn’t even got the same sheen to it. and thats modern stuff, it must have been worse during WW2. plus their will be diferences in the ink that the book was made with so with the model looking lighter on the pic and the diferences in inks / paint shades W9353 may well have been painted in PRU blue. i already have some Huricane MK1s in 1/72 and will be using a Heller one if i re-do this one. if you are doing a PRU Mossie have a looksee at the post i did a couple of weeks back with pics of the prototype Mossie at the de-havilland heratage center, there’s some detail shots that may be useful. good luck with the Finnish a/f version. please post pics if you can.
