The Nichimo 1/200 scale Yamato is sold with a gearbox and motor mount or without it (static display). I’ve read an article warning that the gearbox is antiquated and not worth using if one is considering R/C capabilities. Does anyone out there have information to share concerning where I can go online to find gears, motor mount, power system, controls, instructions, on how to turn this large ship into a worthy R/C water craft? Is there one specific online company that all of this can be bought from, or do I need to shop around to mix and match?
I’ve had Nichimo’s 1/200th Yamato in my stash for YEARS. Bought it in a Tokyo Hobby Shop in '82 for what amounted to $50. My kit has the gearbox but, if I were going to put the ship in the water as an RC boat, I wouldn’t use that gearbox. What I think I’d do is use 4 motors with direct drive to the screws and connected to two motor controllers as port and starboard pairs. The hull has plenty of room for batteries, too.
Sorry, I missed your main question. Just Google “RC ship modeling supplies” and you’ll find all you need as well as numerous RC ship forums with plenty of knowledgeable folks to answer all your questions. Of course, there are also RC modelers on this forum…
