Well, not that little. What’d you expect? Anyway, here’s some better pictures of one of my first projects, Revell Germany’s rebox of Monogram’s 1/72 B-36. (This one’s built up as the recon RB-36F)
I had some older pics of this on the boards before, but they were really bad. I still need to resin cast the turrets, but I’ll do that when I have to cast a whole lot of something. You can see the master in the foreward turret bay.
The NMF was actually pretty easy. Oversprayed with aluminum from a rattle can, and the shiny parts reproduced with Bare Metal Foil. It don’t show, but I can do better on it next time. ([:D])
I know most people don’t see this kit too often (who can blame them? This thing’s over three feet wide!), so I thought I would put up a few of mine. I hope you like!
Don’t you just love those “little” projects. I have a B-29 in 1/48 in the stash and it’s about three feet wide, so if that thing is three feet wide and 1/72…Man! that thing would be huge in 1/48!!![:O] Do they even make the B-36 in 1/48? If so, that box would have to be…Wow! I’d have to reinforce the ceiling if I wanted to hang that beast.[:D][:-,][}:)] Nice job on the NMF. I like it alot.[8D]
Right now it resides on the back of my (thankfully) large workbench, but I’m working on getting some shelves. The shelves don’t have to be that big (the landing gear base is pretty small), they just have to be pulled away from the wall a bit to leave room for the tail and one wing. I don’t have that many kits done right now, so I don’t have to worry about moving previous projects around much.
That is beautiful work on the B-36. I have had a love affair with that plane for many years. I built one as a kid a couple of centuries ago and have another still in the box. Maybe someday I will actually get it built. You certainly did a nice job on yours.
Absolutely fantastic job on the Big Stick![tup] You’ve really done this kit justice. I’m doing one right now for the Cold War GB and can only hope it turns out as good as yours (and , find a place to put it!). Well done and thanks for the pics.
i can only echo the earlier comments. that is a beautiful bird. someday i will do another of these, and it wont end up as the pile of molten plastic the other did.
Very nice build! How did you do the walkways on the wings?
I built one of these giants years ago, and didn’t glue the wings to the fuselage because I had to keep the thing stored. I still have it boxed away. It’s nowhere as nice as yours.
Thanks for the comments, everybody. I actually got this one at quite a steal- originally 80 bucks at Hobby Lobby, but I caught one of their half off sales! [:D] I would like to try another one, but price is the biggest obstical.
The wing walks are all decals, and pretty much a paint in the [censored] to put them all on. The shiny parts are all Foil. Believe it or not, even though half the decal sheet is devoted to wing stripes, they don’t give you enough! I had to fill in the tips with a Sharpie.
My local Hobby Lobby just had a moving sale and I saw that kit for $27 so needless to say…
I was a little disapointed that it just has a big 'ol empty bomb bay. Does anyone know where I could find an aftermarket “physics package” or a detail kit for the RB version?
Very nice job on the turret, BTW. Wish I could do that.
I don’t think there’s much in the way of aftermarket B-36 stuff. I guess there was an alternate decal set out there a long time ago, but it’s long out of production. I’m not sure on aftermarket bombs. You’d have to do some research to see what would go in there and search Squadron to see what you get. (Shame, really. Aftermarket turrets would be awesome…)
The bomb bay’s wrong for the bomber H version anyway. It’s two bays, twice as long, while the kit only has one small one. This is correct for the recon version, which is why I built mine up like that.
The turrets would indeed cause drag problems. They were designed to retract (which is why you don’t see them too often), and I guess it was quite ominous to see all these little turrets slowly rise up when approached by an “enemy” (a wingman who decided to sneak up on one B-36). I guess they didn’t work very well at all, though, so it’s a good thing they were never used in combat. (The mountings were weak, and would twist and jam the gun after a few rounds were fired.)
