Just a couple of quick questions… I am just getting started in modelling, and for my first project I want to build the HMMWV that I used when I was with HMG in the Marine Corps. From what I have read, it seems that the Tamiya kit is the best HMMWV one out there, but it is the M1025. In the Marine Corps HMG plt we used the M1043/1044 (differentiated from the Army’s M1025 by the supplemental armor on the vehicle doors). So, does the Tamiya kit include the supplemental armor panels for the vehicle doors? If the Tamiya kit does not, does any other company produce a 1/35 M1043/1044? Being a Marine, I can’t very well build the Army variant of the Hummer, can I?
A couple more newbie questions… Can anyone tell me what the “M1025 HUMVEE Details (For Tamiya #35263), by: Eduard #35629” is? Is such a Detail kit worth getting? Is there another such kit that is better? Finally, when I was in Desert Shield/Storm, we hung our ALICE packs from the vehicle doors for additional protection, and the cammo net from the rear hatch. Can anyone tell me if there is anyone who makes such accessories in 1/35 scale for additional realism?
Tamiya’s M1025 does not come with the armored doors. However, their M1046 (M1043 w/winch) does come with armored doors. It is alos a TOW vehicle. To get an M1043 weapons carrier, you would need to either scratch/convert/kitbash from another kit the weapons mount pintle and weapon. Or you could get both kits and mix and match pieces to get all the weapons options you want. The normal, flat bumper to make a vehicle w/o winch is included. The Tamiya kits come with some extra gear, not as much as you describe though. However, Tamiya does make a great accessory set that covers all you are probably looking for. It is their new Modern US Military Equipment Set., which comes with all the gear you can pile onto a HMMWV and then some.
Good luck and show us some pics when you get it completed.
Edit: Don’t know why the pics aren’t showing. Oh well, the pics are at the review site if anyone wants to see them. Or you can copy their URL and paste them into your browser address bar.
Thank you for the information. The “Modern US Military Equipment Set” has the ALICE packs and cammo nets that I would want. At the risk of appearing ungrateful, I will just mention one thing. You wrote: " their M1046 (M1043 w/winch)." Actually, the M1044 is the M1043 with winch. The M1046 is the M1045 (the TOW HMMWV with supplemental armor) with winch. A nice site on the variants is: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m998.htm . Sorry to split hairs, and I certainly am grateful for the helpful info that you took the time to provide.
If I can ask one more question that just occurred to me, do you know if the Tamiya comes with the fording stack? Our Battalion always ran our Humvees with the tall fording stack.
No offense taken. They are all HMMWVs to me, I usually get the models confused when it is w/w, w/o, w/ TOW or not, etc. I know the M104X series are all with armored doors though, M102X series are without armored doors. Both M102X and M104X are Armament Carriers as well.
Yes, they both come with fording stack and the extended exhaust.
