I’ve recently tried Mig washes(enamal base) my first couple of times and am looking for some input. I’m a bit surprised how long it seems to be taking to completely dry. I"m able to easily wipe away the excess well over 24 hours from application. I just use a dry rag or Qtip and it easily comes off, no thinner needed. This is over well dried Future, if it matters.
My main concern is how much time I need to give this stuff before I clear coat over the wash. Even after a few days the surface still seems a bit oily. Is this normal? Am I ok to overcoat with this oily feel?
Also, if this oily texture doesnt fade away, what type of clear coat would be better over the top? enamel, acrylic, lacquer?

Good question. I am wondering the same about home-made oil washes. I did my first one using a dilute solution of turpentine and black artists’ oil, over well cured acrylic base, and noted 24 hours later when I touched it, black paint came off on my finger. I must say it did a nice job of filling in the details, however. Anybody have any ideas on this one as well?
I use Windsor and Newton oils for washes all the time. I usually let it dry 24 hours before I topcoat with an acrylic flat with no probs, I’d imagine any kind of clear coat would work, as long as you don’t apply it too heavily.
The evaporation rate will vary depending on weather and temp conditions. Oils will take longer to dry than any other paint. I find that oils produce a better quality wash than enamels. I make my own washes with plain thinner from Home Depot and Reeves or Winsor & Newton oils. For repeated washes, I use a hair dryer to speed up things and then let it sit for a couple of days. I then spray flat acrylic and continue with more filters and weathering.
My friend tried one of the Mig washes and noted no difference in performance from his home brew except the higher price tag of the commercial wash. With that said, I can make a ton of wash for what a small bottle of the ready one costs.
Thanks for the input. I usually make my own also but thought I’d give the Mig wash a try. Not bad stuff but I dont see much advantage over the home made brew. Though the longer dry time I seem to be having could be considered an advantage at times.
