New to Me,AI Photo Editing

I understand your concern Butz, and yes, I too am against people stretching the truth through AI. Especially in our common hobby it is crucial that honesty prevails above just trickery.
We can reserve trickery for the method we use to build a model, but not to fake it, and indeed, sometimes you have a successful build and others you don’t and every honest modeler is quick to point out where he failed in doing something to help others not to fall in the very same traps.
On the other hand, someone who might have difficulties in some procedures might, by revealing them, be helped by another builder who encountered the same problems and who solved them, with some useful suggestion.
This is why we are called a community and not just an elite club of stuffy characters with an upper lip and a stench under their noses.
In your last line you pointed out the problem you had with it, and by doing so you just revealed that even AI is not a perfect tool, unless precisely instructed to be, and is only doing what its programmer taught it to do, in so far it clearly shows how dumb such AI apps can really be.
Personally, I would never use it to shine in front of my fellow peers. I have by far too much respect for myself and my integrity as to do something so stupid. Besides, just like with lies, sooner or later I would be unmasked anyway, so why do it?
People who want to be perfect have yet to understand that perfection does not exist and if ever, one can only aim at it but will never ever really achieve it. It is simply a chimera for the fools and deluded individuals.
And if ever, even Stephen Hawking made it clear that if the universe were perfect we wouldn’t even exist. We are an experiment gone wrong…

This is neat! I play with a bit of AI image creation, mostly in exercises of humor and digital mischeif, so am famiilar with the benefits and limitations of some of them. My main concern would be, intentionally or otherwise, whether the AI is doing a faithful reproduction of the model and the level of detail that the modeler has put their hand to. That ability to place the model in a credible scene should be a planning and inspirational goldmine for diorama/vignette builders.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Adobe Photoshop and similar clones have been a thing for a while. AI may make the means to overstate ones true talent in a more expansive and automated fashion, but the ability to digitally tart up a build isn’t anything new…

So in the interests of full disclosure, here’s an AI-generated background on my very first armour build! ChatGPT prompt: “Can you please generate an image placing my model Panzer IV F2 in a scene depicting involvement in the First Battle of El Alamein in 1942? Please do not alter any characteristics of the model tank other than accounting for source lighting, as I do not want to artificially enhance my model building skills”

Gave it a shot as well. This is my USS Constitution that is nearly done. Just asked AI to put her on the ocean on a sunny day. Pretty convincing (except for the lack of crew and no lifeboats!).

The ship looks fantastic. Do you have a pic of the model pre ai enhanced?

I have a complete build log in the “Ships” category. Latest picture on the build is the image I used for the AI image.

That looks amazing!!. (A little scary to that AI can produce such images)

Forget AI, thats a beautiful build all by itself! The sails, fantastic.

Thanks CBowling and Waikong. It’s taken awhile since I can’t get to the bench every day. But well worth the journey.
And yeah, AI is a bit scary on how accurate it’s assumptions are. Although there isn’t a lot of ambiguity on putting a ship on the ocean.

Aaah, AI. Such a broad topic. As a senior cg artist, I’m very, very biased against it

Nonetheless, we have people at the studios looking into it. While it’s a terrifying tech maturing quickly - I suspect too quickly and too unhinged - it still isn’t a very reliable tool to use , at least in the CG world. Too hard to do retakes, lack of control, and frankly sometimes lack of overall quality !

Ironically though, it often does a better job at photo editing than so called “professionnal photographers” do. Gosh I remember pictures my sister had a pro take of her twin sons, the guy’s photoshop “enhancements” were truly hideous. Ah well, she didn’t seem to mind ; I cringe everytime I see them. I’m sure AI would have done a better job, although just a couple years ago it wasn’t yet as developed as it is now.

As far as our favorite hobby is concerned, I guess I wouldn’t mind adding a background. But not, I think, by asking it to add the model over it itself: I would ask for a generic “matte paint” background, and then add my model over it myself. Heck, with a decent printer, print it and take the photo. Keeping the whole thing authentic, you know ?
With AI, it’s just too easy to stray and unintentionally alter our work.

By alter our work, what do you mean? Our work for the most part is sitting on our bench, our display case or what we bring to shows and clubs.I mean if we alter our models to look better here in pictures, what are we getting, the oohs and aahs of our fellow site members who we will probably never meet? Good for the ego,but who are we fooling, the reality is still sitting on bench and that can’t be altered.

Maybe if we were submitting pictures for a magazine showcase or article,it would be cheating, but I’m sure they have ways if detecting fakes. So my question in our modeling forum world, how can AI be “dangerous”

I understand the political deep fake videos, and where some deviant puts a underage person’s head on an inappropriate body shot and puts it out there, now those things are dangerous and despicable, but like I said earlier, here it’s just fun.I posted my unaltered F-18 along with AI enhanced one so as not to deceive anyone.

It’s really a very big topic, which I would find both long and hard to get into with my limited grasp of english - and readers would find long and tedious to read.
I’m mostly concerned not by the specific case impact of how AI affects the hobby and more by how it insidiously creeps into all layers of the internet and our daily lives, economically, environmentally, creatively, privately, publicly… The extreme cases you described - deep fakes, inappropriate stuff - are just the visible, ugly tip of the iceberg. Thing is, even a simple, innocent generation for laugh, like a kitten in a santa claus costume, or an enhancement like a whole diorama around a scale model plane, actually is part of the very same iceberg. Seems harmless enough, but it’s not. Is it “dangerous” for the hobby? Yes, because it is globally dangerous.

Again I won’t go into too much details. This, here, is not a forum for that particular topic. I’m actually struggling very hard to restrict myself lol, as, as I mentioned, I have direct stakes and fears in the tech. It could, technically, replace my job and my friends’ jobs if the beast keeps being fed and keeps growing.

I just hope, I guess, AI won’t get any grip on this hobby, which already have turned very much digital in these days and age : local shops closing, replaced by online shopping ; forums replacing local meeting groups ; pictures replacing show-and-tell… It’s fortunate there are still community meetings at least.
Sorry. I feel strongly against AI is all. :stuck_out_tongue:

One thing I will do is whatever I post using AI as a quick diorama generator, it is marked as such. I too hope that AI is kept in check and doesn’t take over the hobby. I personally believe that “your” build should reflect your talents and artistic capabilities, no matter how good or bad they may be. If you use it, just keep it honest and show the original with it.

"With AI, it’s just too easy to stray and unintentionally alter our work.”

I had to laugh there (as I wipe the coffee from my shirt). I also find it too easy for AI to be too stupid and alters one’s work without telling it to. For example, I had a top-down shot of my aircraft carrier that I placed on a background of the ocean. I asked to display wake from right to left (bow to stern). AI put the wake in the opposite direction. Ok, so I asked it to reverse the direction. Well, it did do that but it also added another bow section to the stern. Yeah, we are in some deep yogurt with AI if it has trouble with simple commands.

I think it’s a lot of fun to play with AI. Some great pics here - fun thread Tony. I put my La-11 on a Russian air field.

Also created my Avatar playing with AI.

Looks great,it’s all in fun,I mean who would I fooling if I posted a picture of my AI enhanced model and said it’s my work, you guys??? What does that get me,some attaboys? I would still be the same modeler. If you need that kind of adulation, then somethings wrong

I don’t know. I see some good uses for AI in displaying a model. The add a background feature is cool and I hope I can find some decent software at a reasonable price. On the other hand, a person could create an image of something and say it’s a model they built. I know it’s not that good, yet but that will change.

Yes they can,but to what end?

I remember seeing this pic on Facebook long, long ago before AI became common. I thought it was real until I took a really good look and realized there was no crew anywhere on any decks.
