Welcome to the hobby. I have not been modeling for a log time. I started back a few months ago. If I have any advice for you is to read the articles in this web page, and the magazine. Try some of them. They will help you a lot. And eventually get an airbrush, and a compressor. The results are great. Have fun and get well.[#welcome] |

thanks again to everyone for the advice and well wishes, it really means alot to get this kind of support when i am such a newbie. I will try to get some pics of my first build up just as soon as it looks good enuff to pass the scrutiny of the members, lol
I too am just getting back into the hobby after a 23 year abscence. I’m trying to get my 8 year old son interested in it. I used to love building models with my father hopefully my son feels the same way. I didn’t realize how expensive this hobby has gotten. I remember going to the local hobby stores and buying different planes, ships, and armor for what seemed like $4-$10. and that was for 1/32 scale stuff. My favorites were the TBF-Avenger and the SBD Dauntless dive bomber. My son and I just finished building a 1/72 ITALERI F-15. I just figured this would be his first project and my first in almost a quarter of a century. I quickly found out I am really lacking some skill that I used to be fairly decent at. I must have broken the left tail rudder off about 3 times before we finished. I was never up to the standards of those like the B-2 bomber in GSM but I used to be able to glue and paint, or maybe I just wasn’t ever that good at it. I just bought about a years worth of kits for us to do though and I know He and I want to get better so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I did just purchase some of the books that FSM offers. Our next project we’re starting is a 1/48 SR-71 Blackbird from Testors. Any advice or Painting tips? By the way does any body hand paint with regular old fashioned brushes any more? Seems like every one uses a(n) airbrush. Don’t think I’m qualified for that yet.
The best piece of advice any one can give you is be patient. Take it slowly and your skills will improve.
Some people still use brushes. There was a fantastic diorama with a couple of ships in FSM a couple of years ago and the article noted that the guy who built it doesn’t even own an airbrush. That said, an intermediate step that may work for you is plain old rattle spray cans. They’re not as precise as an airbrush and you can’t mix colors, but they don’t leave brush marks and the selection of colors is actually pretty broad. You’ll almost certainly be able to find something that matches or comes close to pretty much any color you need.
