Hi all,
Some of you may know me from several car modeling forums.Lately I have been wanting to get back to building some planes(been at least 15 years since the last one).
I signed up for the group build of a P-40,as I had both a Monogram and an amt kit in my stash,I decided to go with the Monogam kit# 5209.
I was just wondering before I started if there was anything I should be aware of with this kit, or what everybody thinks of it.
Thanks, and I look forward to being here as I get back to building planes.[:)]
Not that I hate the Monogram kit but the one that I had was not very good. It needed lots of sanding on the fuselage to get it to fit and then putty, and the wing to fuselage fit was bad to say the lest nice gap between them. Of course it depends how old your kit is since mine was newer and the molds might have started to shrink on mine. Oh and Monogram kit has rivites all over and the P-40 should not have them. It takes some work to get to look good.
You are welcome! The AMT kit is much better then the Monogram kit but will still take some work from what I read. If you have been building cars I do not think that you should have to much trouble with the AMT kit just have to watch out on the fit of the plane.
The P-40 has long been my favorite WW2 fighter plane(with the F4U Corsair a close second),and just getting the itch to build planes means I’ll probably pick up a few more here and there.
Formwhat I’ve researched, the Monogram is a relatively accurate kit, with the main annoyance of raised panel lines. One must be careful when sanding. The fit varies depending on how worn out the mold was, but from people I know who have built it, it is a “timeless classic”
I’ll show you mine if you show me yours!
I have the Trumpeter 1/48 kit waiting for me once I am finished with my current build. I’ve you’ve been building automobiles, I’m sure your modelling skills are in tact.
