New To Building Models

Hello,

I just joined this community yesterday because I needed something for a kit,
which you can read in my other post.
But I was thinking, I would like to try and see if I can do this kind of thing.
Now I just wanted to ask some things:

First of all, could I just pick up a thing like this out of almost nothing?
Or will I have to invest a lot of money and time before I can get any decent results?
Keep in mind that I do have quite some basic technical abilities.
Like I could build a computer,
I would always get good grades for building simpler things in sch**l.
I’m quite technically handy, but on the other side things aren’t always obious to me,
so it’s kind of mixed.
I would also not be good at math things, not the more complex things anways.
As a kid, I am almost 20 now, I would have some kits to build and paint and such things.
But I would start with them and never quite finish them.
I could either not get it done or I would get bored, but I’m more patient today.

What I am interested in, for model-building, is more like vehicles,
mostly from war and such things, such as planes, ships, tanks, etc.
Like I yesterday found a kit with the HMS Ark Royal…
I don’t know the ship, but I thought “Hay, that looks pretty kool,
especially if I could get the model done.” .
Because lately I’ve been getting into war/battle-vehicles/weaponary/etc.,
so this model appeals to me.
Like I would love to pick up a kit of the Flying Fortress and get it done.
And I just like about any vehicle anyways, it’s all pretty interesting to me.

So anyways, is this something I could just pick up and do?
And I mean the not too complex kits, such as 2 that I have by Revell,
you could also occasionally find in toy-stores I guess.
First of all the building of course, but also the painting of them usually.
Besides all the practice, is it expensive and is it really time-consuming
or is it not that bad?

Thanx for reading.

Hiya! And [#welcome] to the forums, Michael!

I haven’t seen your other post, but i do have to say that many of us are not exactly skilled or experienced enough to crank out museum quality models. Throughout the forums, you’ll find that everyones skills here are about as diverse as the people here. And you don’t need to spend additional money to get good results. It’s all about trial and error, and gaining experience and knowledge through interacting with others here. I highly recommend you check out some of the group builds and even get involved in a few. It’s a great way to exchange ideas and learn new techniques. You’ll find that almost everyone is more than willing to help you as you progress.

It does sound like you are in the right place!

Welcome to the Forums [#welcome]. Glad you’re here.

Regards, Rick
