I just purchased a Sd.Kfz.181 Panzerkampfwagen VI (P) made by Dragon. In the instructions it has some " parts not for use". What are these for? I figure it is for a different varient.
Hi Kilroy
You will sometimes find the same sprues in different models.
This is because certain vehicles, eg. the Tiger and the Sturmtiger used the same chassis. You might need the parts later on so just put them in your spares box. You will find that Dragon especially include extra parts, always handy for something.
Thanks. I found out it was from Dragon’s earlier Elefant and Ferdinand kits.
Also, maybe someone can confirm that you will need to add zimmerit to that variant. I’m not sure.

Would it be too unrealistic to have it painted Panzer Grey and no zimmerit?
Believe it or not, only one Sd.Kfz.181 Panzerkampfwagen VI (P) was fielded. It was a project which combined some leftover parts from previous models. What you have is a “one-off” vehicle.
DML’s instruction sheet direct you how to paint and add zimmerit as was seen in photographs.
If you decide to veer from that, be aware (and it’s perfectly fine) that you’re doing your own thing (and not being slaved to historical accuracy).
Not much historical leeway whatsover with the Sd.Kfz.181 Panzerkampfwagen VI (P). Sorry. Get a Sherman or T-34 next time!!!
Unless you want historical accuracy you can do anything you want and paint it any color. I don’t worry about zimmerit and such as I just do this for fun and not some competition. I got a real car for that.
Enjoy the model and have fun
