i received a Tamiya Flak 36/37 and this is the first armor i have assembled. I really enjoyed making it so i’ve decided to do armor and stop doing autos. I went to the hobby shop to buy another one and found out that there’s a lot of different brands like italeri, revell, academy and tamiya. What can you guys say regarding these brands? should I stick to Tamiya? do these other brands have the same quality as tamiya?
Not all brands are the same quality. Generally Tamiya is very good. Academy isn’t too far of that and Revell does excellent 1:72 armour. Italeri is a good low budget option.
Welcome to the forums avuo
Tamiya are good so is Dragon,Afv Club and the new Academy kits, it just depends on what kit your after
is your after a T34 or Panther A or D, you cant beat the Dragon kits
but if your after a Panther G or Tiger 1, Tamiyas the way to go
as for a M36 Academy makes the best one
heres a link to Perth Military Modeling site http://pmms.webace.com.au/reviews/vehicles/revafv.htm you can get a good review of some good kits there
Welcome to the Dark Side avuo. My 2-cents says that Dragon is a great brand as far as value. You get a lot of goods for the price. Tamiya is possibly the best fitting brand I have built, bu the price in some cases is getting out of hand. Dragon also seems to be putting far more kits out. You just get more bang for the buck with Dragon. Italeri offers some rare subjects at a great price, but quality can be hit and miss.
ok thanks guys! guess i’ll be going to the hobby shop and look for the models you suggested. The problem here is that we have only one hobby shop in our place and has limited stocks on armor. they sell more in autos. i also agree that tamiya can be a pain budgetwise so i guess have to go with the other brands. but quality is the most important aspect i’m after.hehe [:D]
[#welcome] I am a relative newbie here as well, BUT I have found the Tamiya kits to be good to build [others can tell you which are more accurate]
there are also lots of aftermarket goodies available for Tamiyas.
I do have a M7Priest from Italeri to build [I like the way they did the suspension better than the Tamiya BUT I have not assembled it yet, and a ZEVZDA M57 to build. both look nice in the box.
I would suggest that you do a practice resin build before you go for a big fancy resin kit, they are different.
Flak 36/37 88mm anti-aircraft gun. An oldie but a goodie.
To be honest, the answer to your question does not lie with any one manufacturer. Tamiya has its own share of stinkers, although to be honest, just about all of their kits build nicely, it’s just that some of the older ones are lacking in the detail and accuracy area.
Conversely, some of the newest kits by some companies are not very good in terms of fit, accuracy or detail. You best bet is to ask about a specific kit, like what is the best Tiger, Abrams, Jeep, etc.
Welcome to the Armour Forum Avuo.
Another aspect that you may want to consider before making your purchases, is the indy track factor. Many of DML’s kits have indy tracks and to the inexperienced modeller they can be quite the challenge. Whereas Tamiya, Academy, and Italeri all have rubber band tracks. Just something to consider.
Enjoy !!!
Welcome, Avuo
One more thing to consider (there always seems to be one more thing!!);
Keep in mind, I am a big fan of Dragon’s armor kits. I have 4 or 5 times as many DML kits as any other brand, probably than all the other brands combined. Having said that, DML’s instructions are sometimes hard to follow. Especially if you’re just starting out. Italari aren’t bad, but the best, by far, are Tamiya’s. Remember, too, that if you get stuck with any kind of problem, there are a lot of modelers out here more than happy to give a helping hand!
Good luck with whatever you choose.
It’s all a matter of personal opinion. I think that you should try as many as possible and decide which ones you like best, just buy in the order that they suggested to you [;)]
Welcome to the armor forum avuo. The above listed model companies all have great stuff to build.

Hey avuo, I’m new to armor as well, but I can put in my oppinion. Being from a city with little to no serious model shops has led me to the ocassional car show/toyshow vendor. You guys know, the little table off in the corner with the piles of old kits. Well I’ve found that those guys are ussually willing to cut modelers some good deals. Problem being that you can’t find the newest kits available, but hey, if you’re enjoying yourself…? But as for the kit selection, I’ve seen many armor reviews, read all about them and learned from them. My conclusion, as a matter of personal intrest, I prefer the great 1/72 scale Revell kits, I’m just working on my first one, a 1/72 scale JagdPanther. And I to have decided to more seriously pursue armor over auto. But I’ll never really be able to leave my old muscle cars behind…anyways, welcome to the armor page and happy modeling pal![:D][:-^]
Welcome to FSM. Tamiya is what I usually build. Their models are quite good.
Welcome to FSM, avou. Well, I guess the guys got you covered.
