New SR 71 in 1/48th coming from Revell Germany

For anyone that hadn’t heard this. Should be around $90. US

Looks like a pretty snazzy kit. Should be a monster in size.

Even the engines?! That should be quite nice!

From what I have read, the engines are for display only and not intended to be placed inside the fuselage.

Wonder if a 1/72 scale version is in the works?

JohnnyK has one in progress about a half page down

It seems that the US edition of the kit will get a different, ugly box art, and no engines and stand. I felt sad and cheated, but in reality I would not have used the engines or stand anyway.

The base kit still comes with parts to represent the inlet and exhausts, so the omission will not impact the finished model.

Hopefully this will mean a lower MSRP compared to the Euro edition. I believe the US MSRP is around $70. That’s still a lot of money, but having passed on a $85 Italeri kit a few years ago, and taking into account today’s new kit prices, $70 is reasonable.

I have a couple of SR-71 kits in 1/72 scale but the boxes and instructions are unavailable, so I am not sure of the branding on them. The first has a removable nose cone that allows you tou to view the radar, and the other has openable canopies. The first one I built is a serious tail dragger as I didn’t consider things like nose weight at the time. The other sat unfinished for years as the decals were destroyed in a great soda spill, although I did stumble across a new set of decals in a LHS, I still have not completed this kit.

There is also a DR-21 drone I never used - not sure which kit it came with.

Might be worth looking into a new tooling in this scale if one were to come out.

This kit looks good with the two separate engines and stand. I built the Revell 1/72 few years ago. I might buy it if the North Amerian version comes with engines & stand. I’d love to display it in flight mode like I did with my previous one.

If either of them is a Monogram kit, Monogram had the nasty habit of molding an embossed company logo and manufacture date on the bottom, toward the back of one of the wings. The Monogram also has the openable canopy. Personally, I think the Monogram kit is the best of all of them. The cockpit detail is really good (all raised detail instead of a flat sheet with decals) and the flight crew detail is amazing. I really screwed up with seam filling on mine, since I hadn’t discovered Apoxy Clay yet, so I have another one on the way from an Ebay seller. Gonna cut the old one open to extract the cockpit.

If you need instructions for the Monogram, I can scan them and send them to you.

I have the 1/48 Revell on its way too from a vendor in the UK that I use a lot.

Love the pit and flight crew on the old Monogram.
