heard there was going to be a Robotech movie, thanks to all of the CG advancements (Avatar mobilesuits help any?). Along those lines the talk is that there will be some new robotech models! Hope they make new ones, and don’t just release the old 1980’s era stuff. Anyone heard the same?
The only things I have heard was Bryan Singer directing and Miley Cyrus (Hanna Montana) as Minmay.[:XX]
While I loved watching Macross in the early 80’s I refuse to watch robotech crap especially when they can’t even get the characters names and nationalitys correct.
Your better off just watching “Do You Remember Love” made in 1984 (watch it in Japanese, English dubs are horroble)

Yes, Macross: “DYRL” was a brilliant movie adaptation and best watched in the original Japanese release with English subs. The various English dubs (and the Robotech edit) are woeful.
The copy I had was made from a tape a buddy of mine got from a pen pal in Japan so there was no subtitles.
I saw part of it in English once and about threw up at the bad dialog and really bad voice acting.
There is a poor quality copy on VEOH.
Was that the one where Minmay sounded like a truck driver and Hikaru sounded like a girl?
I have a couple of DVD Japanese versions, both of which I suspect were “unauthorised”. One looks like a videodisc (remember those?) transfer with freaking huge scan lines on the screen, like it was transferred between video standards (NTSC to PAL), the other is higher quality with optional subs.
LOL , No the voices where not that bad.
I need to find a good quality copy on DVD one of these days.
I hope you do get a good DVD version some time soon. All I had for over a decade was a 3rd or 4th gen VHS copy, complete with dropouts, colour fade and flaring. The DVD was more than welcome.

Watching anime in the 80’e you tend to see some of the same subjects in the films, Budweiser, Coca Cola and McDonald’s.
There are also the crossover of characters from other shows, Megzone 23 has quite a few.
The MZ23 movies were pretty awesome too, that trilogy making an interesting story (Matrix anyone?). There is a significant similarity between the characters from Macross and MZ23 Part 1 because they were designed by the same artist (Haruhiko Mikimoto) The characters from Parts 2 and 3 were a little different, with the overall art style of Part 3 being quite different. [:)]
you know, its sad. the 80s were the real hayday for GOOD Anime. While there was some bad stuff you had some amazing series like Gundam and Macross. Now, from both series, its just… rehashed pop drivel, its disappointing.

Macross (3), VOTOMS (4), Aura Battler Dunbine (3), Giant Gorg (2), Mazinger (1), Shrungal (sp)(1), Orguss (first 2), Zeta Gundam (2), Space Cobra (first 5), Dirty Pair (1), Gall Force (1), Patlabor (1) Bubblegum Crisis (1), Probably others I’m forgetting.
Saw others at the UC theater in Berkeley like the first US showing of Akira.
Also had a copy of Galaxy Express 999 (movie).
When I was in high school (late 70s) they used to show Space Battleship Yamato (Start Blazers) and Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) on TV in the mornings.
I finally got a DVD of the Japanese version w English subs, but I think it’s a burnt copy ( still better quality than any taped version I’ve seen ).
The Bud can’s not the only one. There are 1 or 2 Kirin cans in there, too.
I don’t trust anything in the way of live-action American adaptations of anime at this point ( Dragon Ball, anyone? ). Maybe if the Bebop movie turns out OK despite Keanu as Spike, I’ll be more optimistic. Til then, I’ll just look forward to Toho’s live-action Space Battleship Yamato being released.
Ok, I look at it this way. When anime was just new they tried it (new being relative to us in the US) gundam tried doing a live action movie, they didnt have the budget for it, had to use old star ship trooper uniforms and they never even called the unit a Gundam.
Now the studios have the money for these films and have the audience for it they want to make it POP (worst word in the world) and put horrible actors that dont fit the part in and change things for retarded reasons (im sorry, thats insulting to mentally handicapped people)
The only redeeming thing is that Japan as started actually building live size versions of these things. I think there is a full size metzinger and gundam out there
I think, as far as this (maybe) movie goes, all you need to do is look at the title.
It ain’t Macross and it won’t be.
For anyone with hopes of it being a “live action” Macross, you can forget it. Studio Nue/Big West own the intellectual rights to Macross (ie. character names/likenesses, Mech designs, storyline and concepts within etc) NOT Harmony Gold, who own the “Robotech” name and (some) distribution (but not creation) rights to Macross derived material.
So, different characters, different ships (and I think the 3-mode transforming fighter may be out) an unrelated (well perhaps peripherally related) storyline - the suck factor will be huge
My daughter is going to Anime Expo here in Los Angeles next weekend. They are doing an all day marathon of Robotech on Friday, with some other things planned. I will have her keep her ears open and let you know anything she hears. She did go to an event a few months ago and met some of the original voice actors from the 80’s English dubbing. They did mention that there was going to be a live action movie, and that what they had been told was it would deal with the original story line, but things may have changed.

Thursday is the day at the Expo for all things Robotech. They are doing an 8 hour marathon of the original episodes, plus some forums on it. She is going to the forum on 25 years of Robotech. She is a huge fan of it. I will post when I hear details from her.

Ok the report from Anime Expo '10 is that there is a live action movie in the works. Not much detail, but they are looking for a director. Information is being held tight as they are working out some licensing issues. It looks like there are plans to expand the universe and take it in some cool directions. Also the prequel to “The Shadow Chronicles” which was released in Japan only is going to be released in the US. Unfortunately they were not able to talk about the movie much. But my daughter did score for me a VF-1S Battleoid of Skull-1. The BanDai 15th anniversary edition. She is going to try to pick up a few more for me tomorrow.

She is a true blessing. She picked up 3 more of the kits for me, so I have 4. She is going to do one, my son will do one, and I will do the other two. The guy running the booth was shocked when she bought all 3 he had left. I will post the contact info for this retailer when she gets back after tomorrow. He told her he can get, or has a bunch of robotech items and kits.
