New Kind of Decals?

I just recieved in the mail my new Hasagawa P-47D w/Angie nose art. Im starting to drool in anticipation of puting this kit together…
My question is this. While looking over the kit I looked at the decals and they’re a kind I’ve never seen before. It looks like the were printed backwards? like you would have to attach them to a piece of glass and them form that to the model? does this make sense to anyone? The kit instructions doesnt make any reference on how to use these and I was hoping this was done on purpose and not some equipment malfunction at Hasagawa. If anyone else has seen these type of decals I need info on how to use them? any special instructions?

Thanks guys.
Aidan

Are they dry transfers?

I dont know what that is Swanny… how would I find out?

What’s the Hasegawa part number for that kit? I think I may have it. Being that I’ve got THREE different Hasegawa P-47D’s sitting in my garage, I’d need the part number to check inside my box.

Sounds like they might be some kind of pressfix decals. I would be very surprised though. Might be an idea to actually read the instructions ( sacrelige!!! ) in case they say something about them

Oops!! Just reread your post and saw you already read them!! D’oh!!![#wstupid]

Sounds like you got a kit with what was advertized as “hi-tech” decals, but which Hasegawa called “new type” decals in the kit. They issued several special boxings of their kits with this type of decal back in 1996 - 1997. I inadvertently purchased a Spit Mk. Vb that had the same type. I never had the guts to actually try them on a model, but they appear to be a hybrid type of pressure sensitive sticker rather than a decal. My Spit came with a separate insert with a painting guide on one side and rather lengthy instructions for applying the “new type” decals on the back side. Take another look at the instructions, there should be a similar sheet in the Jug kit. I don’t think the new decals were well recieved as I haven’t seen any new ones in a long time.

yea this is a was advertised “with hi tec decals” didnt pay too much attention to that when I orderd it. I just thought it meant extra sharps decals, lotsa detail… not that these dont appear to be just that… thier just backwards [%-)]
CaptainB, the kit is Hasagawa P-47D-25 in 1/48 kit #52605

Ok Awood23, found the old High-tech decals in my spares box and fortunately still had the instructions. Here goes.

  1. Remove the protective sheet covering the decals. Take care that the exposed adhesive surface stays clean.
  2. Cut out the decal to be applied leaving some extra space around it. There is no need to trim close to these decals when cutting them from the sheet unless the shape of the area to which they are to be applied makes it difficult to apply if there is any excess.
  3. Carefully remove the decal from the paper. Peel it slowly and gently to avoid tearing.
  4. Place the decal, adhesive side down, on the surface to which it is to be applied. When you are satisfied with its location, fix it to the model with gentle downward pressure. Do not rub the decal yet ( you may wish to use masking tape to hold it in position on the model. If you do, make sure the tape does not overlap the actual decal, just the backing paper ). You can also strengthen the decals adhesive by warming them slightly with a hair dryer at this step.
  5. Place a very small amount of water on your fingertip and gently rub over the entire surface of the decal, applying downward pressure, until the white paper seperates from the decal and begins to move. Use a moistened cotton swab on very small decals.
  6. Completely remove the paper from the decal.
  7. Use a cotton swab to absorb the excess water and, if necessary, force the decal to conform to the surface of the model.

Those are Hasegawas instructions, not mine. They came in a Spit kit but are probably the same as your Jugs. I never tried them, they may work, may not. If you do use them, post the results of your experience. LOL.

Well THAT sounds like a recipe for disaster!! No wonder no one has seen those decals for a while!! You need a degree course to get those right from the sound of it!! Advice: Junk them and get some conventional after market ones [;)]

Thanks RJ for the info… that should help alot. Anyone having any experience with these type decals, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Chris, if it werent for the fact that I bought this kit just for the nose art I would do just that. The control panel is a decal peice that I intend to replace with a more detailed one with raised details. I think this would be a good place to practice.

actually sounds pretty good. the process isnt really too difficult. interesting…
