All, I am starting a new, contract position at Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee. I will be doing to long distance commute on the weekends, but will have the evenings to myself. Any good hobby shops I should know about? Clubs? Any other advice for living in the Milwaukee area for a year? Thanks for the help.
Congratulations on the new job! I live in North Aurora so yeah, pretty big daily commute. I don’t know of anything in Milwaukee but its a pretty cool city. I’m sure you will find stuff modelling and otherwise to occupy your evenings. Good Luck!
Not sure about any hobby shops in Milwaukee , but there is a hobby store in Racine called Gary’s Hobby Shop. I’m not sure if it’s still open ( it’s been awhile since I lived in that area) , but it did have a pretty decent selection of models and paints.
Hi John - I’ll let the locals chime in on the hobby shops, but I’m a member of IPMS R.I. Bong in Milwaukee. It’s a great club. We meet second Friday of every month (so next is 7/14). We’d love to have you. Address is Water Stone Bank, 6560 S 27th St, Oak Creek, WI 53154. Hope to see you there!
Chuck, Thanks for the invite. I don’t think I will be able to take you up on the offer this month, but if I can have a rain check I’ll try to make it another time. Have you ever considered coming down to Downers Grove area for the Butch O’Hare meeting? Its at the same time at Bong, but we have some really wonderful modelers and some nice friendly people to boot. Hope to meet you soon.
If I remember correctly, isn’t this website based in Milwaukee? Along with all of Kalmbach Publishing? Maybe you can getcherself a tour of the facilities, and meet the staff that publishes FineScale Modeler…
Hi John - I’d love to head down that way someday. I’m actually on the same side of the border as you. I usually only have a shot at one meeting a month though - at least while work and kids occupy the rest of my time. And no problem on the rain check BTW - you’re welcome anytime.
I know it specializes in model railroad stuff, but if you do any scratch building, check out Walthers store. They have a really nice mix of scratch building supplies that many stores do not carry (though my local ones will order stuff from them for me- just as easy to order myself). I always check them out when I am in Milwaukee.
