New Here...Just finished F-14D VF-31 Line Jet...Looking for critiques.

Hello all. This is my first post on your forum. I just started modeling back in August and I’m slowly finding these sites. I’m always looking for feedback to improve my future buids.

Here is my 5th build and most recent. I’ve been strung out on Super Hornets and this is my attempt at the HAS Tomcat. Please feel free to give my any imput that may improve my future builds.

I look forward to posting in the future.

Great build![tup]

Welcome to the forum. And that is one fine looking 1st post. Looking forwrd to more of your builds.

First, [#welcome] to the forums!

Second, that is a solid build judging from the photos. Subtle weathering, especially like the chromate yellow wear on the starboard pod. I don’t see anything I would change, looks very well done indeed. [tup]

Beautiful work John! About the only thing I can see to critique, and this is very very small, is the canopy to windscreen alignment. It is slightly off if you lookin the #2 and #3 photos. You may be able to fix this with minor work. Everything else looks absolutely superb!

It looks very good

as said before the weather ing just right, and the detail painting on the ordinance looks great!

Thanks all for the replies and the warm welcome. The canopy alignment has been corrected. These are my original photos taken before the mirrors were glued into the frame and the canopy taped down and attached to the fuselage.

Welcome to the forums John. What a beauty for a 1st post. How did your previous builds turn out? Id like to see those if this one is anything to go by.

…Guy

Very well done sir! May I ask exactly which kit this is? And, welcome abord.

Mac

Thanks again for the compliments. Like I said I have found my sefl partial to Super Hornets and Tomcats. This Tomcat is was the Hasegawa F-14B converted to a D. I have also buit one other HAS F-14B and 3 Revell Super Hornets. Here are a few of the others.

The Hornet and Tomcat were entered in the Richmond VA IPMS show. The Tomcat won 3rd. I was please since it was my 4th build.

My personal favorite…The Revell 1/48 Super Hornet…

The intake and exhaust covers were made with blue painters tape.

[#welcome] This your 5th model? WOW!! Very nice. I worked with Tomcats back in the day and this looks right on. This is why I kitbash. I can’t compete!![(-D]

I’m not mentioning this as a critique, but as way to futher knock the socks off anyone who see your work on Tomcats.

I almost forgot…My favorite new detail. The rain removal jets and the yaw string. They really give the nose a bit of life.

[#welcome] Welcome aboard! This is your fifth model? I couldn’t do this and I’m probably on my 250th model.[(-D] I spent some time working with Tomcats and this is right on. You obviously did your homework. I rarely critique because that’s not my style, but I’m going to mention this so you can further knock the socks off anyone if you build anymore Tomcats. I’ve certainly not figured out how to do it, but if you could find a way to tint the front with screen, that would add to the look of your already serious talent. Great work.[8D]

Here’s an example. I took this around 1991 on board CV-61.

Eddie,

I got you covered. I think the tinted windscreen is the most hottly debated topic when building Tomcats. I did open that can of worms on another forum when I began my research. I’m of the school that the tint is visible. Since I’m new at this I can’t be to critical of others. I do believe that in many models it is the most overly pronunced part of the build. Looking at the actual jets here on display at Oceana the tint is there but not ast vivd as seen in many models. I choose to add the tint but very subtle. It is not real visible in my pictures but to the eye the tint is visible and very convincing. I hand painted Future with 2 drops of green food coloring and one drop blue.

Right on the money! I get the impression from what you mention about other boards that there’s debate about the tint? I can tell you from staring at Tomcats from sun up till sundown during the 2 years I spent in Crash & Salvage on the Ranger that there is no debate. It is there. [:)]

Great build! Keep up the good work. And welcome to the forums.

John,

I can’t really offer any critiques or corrections - that’s a very impressive build. I just want to say that I love the way you’ve done the weathering. It has the mottled look of a kinda dirty bird - but without so much dwelling on just the panel lines. Very nice effect !

Chris

Wow…you have set the bar very high for yourself. No critique here- just lovely work.
