Hey guys, just wanted to show you this–my 5-year-old nephew “Max” built his first tank this week!
He’s quite a remarkable kid–always wants to know how things work, what makes them “go”. When my Dad was butchering his deer in the garage, Max stayed in there in rapt attention, and asked my Dad if he was going to cut the skull off so he could see “how the brain makes him work”–this is a 5-year-old kid!
Anyway, knowing how much he liked to understand things and how they work, I sent him a bunch of old model directions, with notations in the borders; “Here’s the wheels”, Here’s the turret", “Here’s the gun”, etc…the day he receives the directions, my sister emails me the photos of the “Hetzer” that he built from the Hetzer directions! Kids never seem to have the ability to amaze me! I’m thrillled that he has taken to them so readily!
So I figured I’d post his first “tank”, as I’m sure it won’t be the last of his work here! I think we have some “new blood” for the hobby! Give him a couple years, and he’ll be asking for color charts and weathering advice! LOL! [(-D]
Way to go doog.Keep encouraging the lad.On Christmas morning,I assited my nephew in building his third tank. These kids hopefully will be future modelers that will keep the hobby going strong.
Great rendition of the Swedish S tank, block LEGO. It saw first action in the great Breakfast War of 1990, when Greggo told Meggo, “Leggo of my Eggo!” Craigo then allied himself with Meggo and the battle was on. Much syrup was spilled before neggo-tiations took place and a peace treaty was signed before everyone was toast.
His tank is a great effort and my son thinks its great and he is a dedicated lego builder having cleared out toys r us out at christmas of thier lego(seemed like that to my wallet)Bit worried about the scull and brains bit ,my son would be horrofied to see an animal being chopped up.He likes to see them running around.
I understand your point, Bodge, but Max likes them that way as well. He just has a tremendously inquisitive mind, and we never “baby-talk” to him, or “simplify” concepts for him to grasp.
He wanted to see what Gramps was doing, and my Dad just explained to him that this was where the hamburger meat came from–just a fact of life.
Anyway, he didn’t seem to wake up sceaming about it; who knows, maybe he’ll be a surgeon one day? …who builds award-winning models? [swg]
My so has just started the OLD Tamiya 70’s Honomag. He has the base color on, so he can paint the interior while it is still open. He already has his second build picked out another 70’s Tamiya Panther. We will post pictures when he finishes it. I will have to use a 35mm film as my digital camera took a dump when the warranty wore out [#offtopic]
Yep. Get 'em while they’re young! He’ll grow up to drive some poor, long-suffering woman to wit’s end, some day! Well, that’s how it works at my house . . . .
I think its awesome that your nephew is into leggo. I still have a huge ottoman full of the stuff in my ma’s attic. Its what got me into building kits. It was like a logical progression. Good on ya Doogster, start em young.
errr… wasnt it Geofrey Dahmer who had a fascination for cutting up dead animals from a young age after watching his father do it? LOL
