I’m working on a 1/48 Koster Fw-200 Kondor and have just started to put some color on it. This is the lower wing panel pre-shaded then painted. I plan on putting a wash over the deeper panel lines later. How does it look to you guys? Be honest okay cause this is going to someone when complete and I want that guy to have a top notch piece of work.

Maybe tone down the preshading a bit with a little more base? To me it looks a little overstated. I always thought a subtle preshade is the best way to go.
looks pretty good. Then again im not the best painter. Cant wait
I agree with JWest. I would hit it with another light spritz of base coat. Preshading IS the way to go, but subtlety is the key. You could hit the middle of the panels with lightened base coat if you wanted to make it a little more dramatic. That’s a judgement call on your part, though.
It’s looking great! Please keep us posted.
Yes, definitely keep us posted. I would love to see that complete
Looks good to me, Matt…
I guess the amount of wear & tear the aircraft has sustained determines how much pre-shading is visible. If the others you’ve done are any indication how this one’s going to come out, I’d say it’s going to be just fine.[:)]
Soldier on!
Take care,
Frank
Looks good from here Swanny. If you want a weathered bird, I’d leave it as is.
Regards, Rick
Swanny:
I think it looks quite good, but perhaps tone down the pre-shading as others have suggested.
C’mon, Swanny, when’s the last time you produced something that was not “top notch” ?
[#ditto] I’d keep it. If any thing maybe a touch fade in the center like thehannaman said. Either way, I wouldn’t tone it down much.[2c]
IMHO pre shading, weathering and panel lines should be VERY subtle, unless you are trying for the extreme war weary look.

I noticed that when I posted a pre-shaded wing once, that the photo diminished the effect quite a bit. Therefore, I think maybe another go round with the base color is needed. I still think it looks awesome, but just a wee bit more base.

Looks good from where I am sitting.I do not think that you need to overcoat it ,looks fine to me.As an aside Why would you doubt yourself when you are one of the best modelers on the forum?
Agree with Rick…shade on the “weariness” of the aircraft. Looks good to me otherwise.[:)]
Mr. Swan,
Understand that you are not unlike a God of miniatures to me. I have your website forever embedded in my Favorites folder.
I would keep the whole thing just as it is and apply a shade of darker and lighter colors to different panels. The lines look good to me. I hope to acheive the skills you have one day.
Thanks for your contribution,
Kevin
Okay, don’t get me wrong here, but I might seem a little rough on you now. It is meant as some honest response, like you requested[;)]:
First of all, I am a atheïst concerning the believe in preshading with airbrushes. The preshade color you sprayed on - IMHO - is rather purple-ish, and far too wide sprayed on. This gives a cortoon-esk like appearance, which I personally don’t like. I know others do, as is shown offently in diorama’s, mainly of armorbuilders.
If I guess you were going to paint more layers of grey over the model, the contrast of the panellines will fade. Again - IMHO - this is a good thing for the wide sprau over the panels itself, but you will loose too much in the ‘trenches’ (not meant as an insult to the model [:D] It looks moulded well) itself.
I’d say: choose a slightly darker shade of grey, than you used now, and let cappilary effect run it through the panellines. For the really deep trenches you could repeat this after the paintjob, as you planned to do so already.
BTW (which (BTW) is an acronym for Dutch/Belgian Sales Tax and I make my living with consulting, I’ve used a fineliner (thin marker) to retrace the engraved panellines of my 1/48 Revell Eurofighter. Contras is High, as the marker is black. For me this is new, but I expect highly of it.
Good luck, and keep us informed!
Swanny, I’d be inclined to give it another coat of the blue, as it looks a little too harsh as it stands.
Karl
I like the pre-shading as it is now.
This is, as always, a personal preference. I always like heavy pre-shading.
I think that after some decals, a flat coat and wash this will look just right.
Thanks for all the honest opinions, I do appreciate it. I felt the lines might be a little too heavy myself but was not sure. I think I will add some lighted base color to the centers to give a little more color variance and may tone some of the lines down a little further. After this is all done the model will be sealed with aFuture then I’ll run a darker wash into the heavy lines around the control surfaces. I’ve been working on this project since Christmas and it still has a few weeks to go. I’ll post completed pictures when it ges there.
