Hi, what I want to do (sometime in the future if I ever get to it… so much to do kit wise) is do a little dio based off the end of the opening to MAS*H with the docs running to the landed copter. My problem is finding figures with those poses that arent in heavy armor/thick clothes. Can anyone offer any suggestions on kits to use, or how to modifiy kits to get the look of a light jacket running, somewhat ducking down
choose the figures {I suggest 1/35 has a better selection and bare heads are available} then sand down the figures removing the belts, harnesess, leave the combat boots on, paint them in a pale blue/green scrub, white cap {which was a material called stockinet tied on one end to create the beanie } if you can find heads with watch caps you could paint those white as scrub caps
the lab coats are the hard part, those will need to be scratch built. tissue paper or old white hankerchiefs {this might be easier to work with}
you might also check for some old REVELL{?} models of the MASH sets, one has Hawkeye in his robe with the cowboy hat and a martini, hot lips and radar in a jeep. it also has the Swamp
the one with the helicopter may have the running staff good luck
oh your kidding me, they actuially have mash kits (although old) Ill have to look for them.
But I might have been confusing, im not looking for them in scrubs, im looking for to replicate them in the normal, non winter outfits, the shirts and light jackets that they are in most. I want to replicate the scene of them running to a copter thats landing. I already found a kit of a 1/35 Mash helicopter, and I know where to get a jeep kit as well, Just need the figures.
Can you suggest somewhere (preferably in america) that has anything that your refering to?
Have you tried Squadron.com. I have order there before and like them, sometimes can’t get the older kits however. Also, GreatModels or any of the other site that sometimes adverties here on FSM.
Grizz
I agree with great models and Squadron for figures, the MASH models are OOP but you might find them on evilbay many times they did run to the choppers in scrubs with white lab coats over the scrubs, and of course Hawkeye would go in his red bathrobe
I found some of the kits on ebay for a not to bad price. I know they went in their lab coats, but I never liked that look.
Thanks for the sites though!
Tamiya kits–both old and new versions–are really good starting points for those figures. You can modify them with techniques described in Shepherd Paine’s How to Build Dioramas book–and/or just be creative!! Sand off details as desired, or, use a Dremel tool to modify clothing folds and details as needed. You can also easily modify clothing/uniforms with sculpted putty, masking tape or facial tissue (i.e. Kleenex).
Korean Conflict era US military uniforms were very similar to WWII US military uniforms–many times, just surplus WWII stuff. Your best choice is to do some research (watch the show a few more times!!, look on the internet or in books) for pics of uniforms similar to what you are wanting to model. The clothing then was primarily an OD green that faded based upon manufacturer dye process, laundering, wear ‘n’ tear, etc.
As said before, Revell made a few 1/35 scale MAS*H kits–one a Bell 47 and the SWAMP scene and I think another one with a 2 1/2 ton truck. I’ve never seen them in person, just on eBay…so can’t comment on the quality of the kits. Actually…correction: I HAVE seen the helo built-up at a Model Contest and it looked great!
For the Dodge WC-54 Ambulance, Testors/Italeri, Bilek and (old) Peerless make that kit (actually the same kit, just reissued). I have 3, built one and halfway done with the second: an EXCELLENT kit (in my opinion) that can, with a small amount of work, be made into a superb representation of that ubiquitous vehicle!
Hope this helps! Keep us posted on your progess–looking forward to seeing what you do with this idea!!! Good luck!
