Need some opinions on masking ideas

I’m coming up to the point where I’m going to have paint my RF-4. Instead of my usual trick of getting a model 75% done and abandoning it, I’d like to actually finish this one. So here’s the problem: the decals include a couple of curved decals that delineate two very contrasting colors (gull gray and sea blue). So I figure I’ll paint the whole thing gull gray then mask off the nose which is dark sea blue. So, to get to the point what is the best way to mask a curve like this? Here is the basic idea I’ve come up with: Either cutting out the decal and using it as a template for a new mask or photocopying the decal sheet, cutting out the copy of the decal, and using it as a mask. Has anyone tried this or does anyone have any other suggestions?

If you look at my sig pic, you can see what it is I’m talking about, I’m building that exact plane.

hmmm good question, photocopying the decal and using it as a template for a mask might be a good way to go.

you can make a two piece mask with it, lay the decal copy on some frisket film or wide painters tape, cut the curve you need, that is one side of your mask, you want to be sure it will be able to lap OVER the nose (i.e. you want to go over the 1/2 point a little so the mask will overlap) then do the opposite on the other side of the frisket or tape. (this is how the pre-cut masks for canopies do on canopies with rather sharp curves like that nose) THEN, take that decal template and get it exactly in position where you want it. lightly pencil the outline so you know where to lay the edges of the masks…

I know that might not make much sense, if you need me to I will draw it with my poor artistic skills. Better yet maybe someone has a pic that can take of a precut canopy mask which will give you the exact idea I am thinking of…

Frisket works great for what you want. Just trace the decal lines you want on the Frisket, cut it out, peel off the backing material and apply to the model. Then paint and remove the Frisket.

Okay, thanks for the advice. Never heard of frisket before, I’ll have to look around for some.

Any art supply store will have it. Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and decent one. It is very common.
