Need help with Stuart Honey camo

Well i’ve taken a break from all the wingy thingy’s and decided to do a peice of armour[:p]
I’m making Academys Stuart Honey and i’m totally baffled about the camo scheme[:(]
So here’s the [?] what are the actual colours in the Gunze or Tamiya acrylics…
Oh BTW i’m doing the North African version from 7th Armoured Division with the tri colour scheme of sand blue and grey[tup]
Cheers Jules…

Jules, Im building the same model and have been chasing the colours for the tri camo if you give me a day to sort it out I post the Tamiya colours for you…

I’d be interested in those as well. I have the kit but didn’t want to start it until I had some idea of what colors to use. Apparently, the color call outs in Academy instructions don’t refer to a specific paint brand. At least thats what I was told over on the painting/airbrushing forum. I normally use MM enamels, but would use something else if need be. Pete

Try using the “search” feature at the left of this column. Type in “stuart”. This will give a list of FSM Stuart articles, including a review on this kit with how reviewer painted this. Hope this helps.

Apparently that’s not the only problem with the paint scheme in the Academy instructions. In his modeling guide to the Stuart, Steven Zaloga writes that the Caunter scheme as shown in the instructions was already out of date before the Stuarts showed up in Africa… “The kit instructions should be be avoided as they bear no resemblance to the actual markings… By the time they arrived in Egypt, the earlier Caunter scheme with its distinctive geometric patterns had been cancelled. However, the Honeys appear to have been painted in a local interpretation of the Caunter scheme, some like Bellman in a two-tone scheme of Portland Stone and Slate. Others had a three color scheme similar to the earlier Caunter pattern of Portland Stone, Slate and Silver Grey.” (Zaloga, 60).
At the back of the book, he lists the colors as follows: BSC no 28 Silver Grey, BSC no 64 Portland Stone, and BSC no 34 Slate.
Now if anybody know where to get those colors, or what combinations to use to make them, we’ll be in business.

The review under “Browse by Subject”, “Armor” on the FSM site gives a list of Tamiya colours that were used. Here is the link:

Hope this helps. BTW, how is this kit? I was thinking of picking up one for myself.

Jim [:)]

I found BSC colors on a comparison chart I normally use. (BSC stands for British Standard Colors) The problem is the numbers don’t match up. The chart shows the colors with a number of BS381C-(then a 3 digit #), and the names don’t show up at all. I’ll keep looking. Apparantly, this is going to be harder than I expected.

Thanks for your help guys[tup] It’s most appreciated[:D][:D][^]

Copterguy the kit is a very nice piece of work with some excellent detail both interior and exterior…You also have the choice between individual tracks or rubber one’s, being a wingy thingy builder i think i’d better stick with the rubber tracks[tup]

Jules,
The Tamyia references are

Academy ref 10 Desert yellow = Tamyia XF60 Desert Yellow you can add a small amout of XF 49 Khaki if you wish to darken it a bit.

Academy ref 11 Dark Green = Tamyia XF 61 Dark Green

Academy ref 12 Slate Grey = Tamiya 60% XF20 Medium Grey and 40% XF 23 Light blue.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Wayne. That helps.

Today I came across two more sets of Tamiya combinations for the Caunter scheme. The first one is XF-59 Desert Yellow mixed with XF-2 Flat White and XF-15 Flat Flesh, then XF-53 Neutral Grey, and finally XF-10 Flat Brown mixed with XF-2 Flat White. The second combo is XF-59 Desert Yellow mixed with XF-15 Flat Flesh, then XF-18 Medium Grey well lightened with XF-2 Flat White, and finally XF-63 German Grey mixed with XF-13 Japanes Army Green.
I got both of them out of the The War in the Desert edition of Steel Masters, a very good French military vehicle modeling magazine.

Does the magazine give the ratios of the colors and or photos of the three color scheme? Do you have any idea how I can get a hold of a copy and if not do you know of any links to photos? I probably wouldn’t make a huge deal about the historical accuracy of the camo scheme, but if I can get an example of a more accurate one, it couldn’t hurt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The articles in the magazine didn’t give any ratios, unfortunately. As far as getting the mag, well, you could go to their website, www.steelmastersmag.com, but it’s all in french. The only useful pictures are color pics of the kits they were showing. None were Honeys. If you’re interested, I’ll try scan them and e-mail them to you. If you want the pics, try to let me know before 1:00pm tomorrow. E-mail me. I don’t have a scanner at home, so I’ll have to do it on my father’s. If I can’t get it done tomorrow, it will have to wait until next weekend.

Before you paint your Honey it may be worth reading this article

Pete

Wow. Thanks, Pete. That’s a first rate resource. I put it straight into my favorites.

This site pretty much puts it to rest, doesn’t it? The problem is with the equivilants. My reference does not account for 2 digit BSC #'s, only 3 digit.

Thanks for the link Pete, Time for a rethink on the colour scheme before I build the Honey.

As for the Blue I have a couple of photos from a museum that shows a light blue colour used on a Matilda.

I think I’ll mix up whatever I can that best matches the two colors in the clubhyper reference. I’ve put enough time into this to realise that there doesn’t seem to be any definite answer in the various sources that I’ve read. As long as I’m close, and the paint job is well done in a technical sense, I’ll be happy.

Nice link, I also had trouble trying to figure out the camo on this kit so I did the japanese captured version.[:)]
