After years off from the hobby I have jumped back in with both feet. I have read up on all the great links provided by many of you. I have just built a Tamiya F4U kit to get my feet wet, and it’s been coated with it’s seablue, waited 24 hours, added a coat of future waited 48 hours. Now I have tried to use a wash of acrylic grey to fill in the panel lines.
All I ended up with was a ruined finish. As I filled in the panel lines, following some readings, I attemped to wipe off the access but it left a coat, or haze, or not sure the right words.
I tried thinning with warter, same results. Help if you can, what did I do wrong?
Generally speaking you do an oil wash ( mixture of artists oil paint thinned with mineral sprits )over an acrylic gloss finish. and an acrylic wash ( watercolour paints plus a few small drops of detergent thinned with water )over an enamel gloss. That way the wash cant effect or eat into the finish.Kind of the way that water flows off ducks plumage; know what i mean? I like to let my washes dry over night and then wipe away the excess with a lint free cloth dampened with the appropriate thinner and/or a broad paintbrush. i hope this helps you ! …Peter .
I struggled with this technique for a while also. The coat of Future is a must. I like to paint with enamels, wash with acylics. What I’ve discovered is dish soap in the acylic wash is a absolute MUST, if you want to be able to clean it off later. Since then I’vev had no problems. Good Luck and have fun!
I just wanted to say thank you for publishing such a wonderful and informative web link. I can’t wait to try out some of your techniques…I especially liked your masking tape idea for filling seams…
This was a great thread gang…I think one of the nice things modelers can do who visit this site is to provide information to help others to advance. Some do a great job of that.
