good day! i am confused on what color is to be used for armors in vietnam and in ww2? is it olive green for vietnam and olive drab for ww2? i think olive drab is too dark (tamiya acrylics) for ww2 as compared to references, are there any alternative colors that can be applied to these armor? im using tamiya hobby paints.
Both timeframes used Olive Drab Green. The problem is that OD changed over the years and faded and wore at different rates as well as being different shades from different manufacturers. There is no one, perfect OD Green paint.
[#ditto] It’s even hard enough to get two bottles of any paint to match up. I look at reference picts or real vehicles and try to match as best as I can. I’ve seen O.D. almost black or purple to a weird limey color.(Not our British friends out there!![:D])
When I went in the Army back in 73, they told us the tanks (M60A1’s) were OD green, but they looked like they were black. As a compromise when I built my M60 I added some black to OD green and ran with it. I don’t recall the mix, I just played with it till I got the color I wanted then loaded up the airbrush.
Accurate or not, I like the look of Model Master OD acrylics. After weathering, the colors won’t matter much anyway.
If I want the paint to look “newer” I use Tamiya’s OD, it is a good deal darker than the rest. For the middle of the road I use Polly Scale, which is also my favorite to work with, it gives the best results. For a faded out look I use model master, it is the lightest, I usually use it on cloth, like uniforms and bags, but have painted vehicles with it.
So, like Heavy Arty said, it counts on what you want, and there is no one end all shade.
ok thanks for sharing guys… thank you for your ideas… [:D]
I use Humbrol #66 , its very dark , but I think it’s a good color for American Armor in Vietnam , as well as armor used stateside at that time . I had a picture of a M-60A1 , taken at Fort Knox , back in the late ’ 60’s , and had " Boone’s Farm " , painted on the turret, and the O.D. , looks very dark .
