I’m new to the site and relatively a newbie when it comes to kit modelling. I hope you guys can help me with my query:
I need help in determining the official colors of the Swedish “splintered” camouflage scheme, prevalent in aircraft like the Saab Viggen. A friend of mine sent me a Matchbox Saab AJ-37 Viggen (1/72) from Singapore and though the instruction leaflet is printed in Chinese, the instructions are visual and thus easy to follow (I’ve built Matchbox kits before). However, the color designations are totally in Chinese and do not even indicate the Humbrol reference numbers (must be in Chinese, too). There seems to be 2 shades of green, tan and black for the upper surfaces, and a gray for the undersides. Someone suggested to me that the tan is similar to FS 32079 (U.S. Tan), and that one of the greens is Testor’s Pale Green, but I wanted to be sure. Will someone with an experience in Swedish camo please help me out (if possible, please indicate Humbrol ref. nos., Testors, or FS nos.)? I will greatly appreciate it.
Onyan,
I’m not sure about the exact colours (mostly because I would nt try to get the exact shades anyway…!), but here’s a good site for some info on the Viggen…
Thanks a lot for all your help, guys. The Viggen is indeed one sexy-looking plane and I hope I can do justice to the model (though recessed panel lines seem too wide and too deep for the scale – I’ll get the Hasegawa kit and some AM stuff when I’ve finished this “practice” model [:D]). Wish me luck!
Hi Onyan and welcome to the forum. i have the Heller Saab Viggen and it seams a nice looking kit, i’ll let you know more when i build it, it has the humbrol color numbers in, are these any use to you?.
Greg
Long time ago, Humbrol had specific Swedish paints among other specific sets; they do not sell them anymore ( Swedish I mean, I don’t know for the else ) so they propose the following mixes or equvalents :
_ Light Grey 322 M : Humbrol n° 117
_ Black 093 M : Humbrol n° 33
_ Brown 507 M (Humbrol) n°150 : 32 parts
n° 60 : 7 parts
n° 25 : 6 parts
n° 34 : 3 parts
_ Dark Olive Green 326 M : n° 150 : 22 parts
n° 33 : 7 parts
n° 34 : 3 parts
_Blue Grey 058 M : n° 27 : 14 parts
n° 94 : 3 parts
n° 34 : 2 parts
n°109 : 1 part
I did not try it but I believe these mixes must be trusty ( such a complicated investigation that would result wrong would be…unbelievable; I mean the mixes of Humbrol must be as least as accurate as the specific tints of Humbrol now gone)
So, chap, up to your paint shelf and your mixing pipettes, and let us know;
