Hi there All, i have just bought the Tamyia kit of a Messerschmitt Bf109E-4/7 Trop (item number 61063 in the Tamiya Catalog). In the kit there Are 3 different version to build, some small differences in the build, major diff in the colorscheme.
Now, here is my problem.
I was planning to build the 7./jg26 version (the yellow nose) and i have went over the colors needed. Most of the colors are no problem, but when painting the outside, Tamiya want me to use their AS Colors (Mixed color in spraycans for Tamiyas Airpanes).
The Problem is that i have an Airbrush, and i dont want to buy colors in spray cans, but rather use my own airbrush since i have invested in one…
Now, i have checked some Color Reference Charts, but haven’t found any good ones that list the Tamiya AS series
So now, i ask if there’s anyone that can give me tips on what other colors to use that are as close to the right colors as possible
The colors i want to substitute for NON SPRAYCAN colors are:
(These Colors are what is used in the german cammo on the utside)
AS-3 Grey Green
AS-4 Gray Violet
AS-5 Light BLue (Tamiyas own XF23 Light blue is not even close)

those colors sound like RLM 74, 75, 76. Testors makes those colors, if you can get them in Sweden. I looked on line at Humbrol, and can’t tell for sure if they have a match. What lines of paint are avaliable to you, besides Tamiya’s?
Hi there wayne.
Thanks for the speedy reply…
My Color collection mainly consists of Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo, wich seems to be the easiest to find at the moment

Those same RLM colors are available in the excellent line of Poly Scale acrylics, which I’ve found airbrush really well with nothing but water to thin it, giving a very smooth coat. I hope you have access to those, or can order them through Hannant’s or Squadron or even Model Expo.
Though people tend to think of Model Expo as a dealer in expensive wooden ship kits, they have a vast range of plastic models, tools and paints, and their sales are sometimes outstanding. They never sell for less than 20 percent below retail, but often less than 50 percent. Get on their mailing list. Just give them a call. Sorry I don’t have that 800 number on me right now, but if anyone wants it, I can get it.
Squadron shows Rlm 74, 75 in the Gunze range, but not RLM 76. Maybe your supplier can get those for you, while you look around for 76. I don’t know how “accurate” the colors are. If you read through a lot of color posts, you’ll see just about everybody tell you to do what feels right to you, as far as color accuracy.
I use Model Master enamels, but all three colors are also available in their acrylic range.

Thank you All for the great info, got a really nice answer on a swedish IPMS site though.
Just thought i share the info if there’s another lost soul out there sometime.
Tamiya Colors
AS-3 = RLM 74 Greygreen = 7XF-21 + 3XF-19
AS-4 = RLM 75 Greypurple = XF-54 + just a hint of red
AS-5 = RLM 76 Lightblue = 6XF-23 + 4 XF-2
Gunze Sangyo
AS-3 = 9GS:H68 + 1GS:H64 (GS:H068)
AS-4 = GS:H69 + a hint of red (GS:H069)
AS-5 = 1GS:H67 + 1GS:H332 (H417, 1GS:H314 + 1GS:H334)
Yep, that Swedish IPMS site is the last word on color and just about everything else. It’s almost mandatory for a modeler to have it in their Favorites box. But might I suggest that if you are going to go to all that trouble to acquire the Gunze Sangyo paint and do all that mixing, you should get a copy of Iliad Design’s “Aircraft Color Chart: Luftwaffe Fighters (Early and Mid-War),” which contains paint chips and splinter patterns for you aircraft. I got mine for 6 dollars American from Squadron, along with some of their other charts with chips.
