Hello folks. I am planning to build a 1/72 Canadian Mk6 Sabre. I know Hobbycraft has something similar but I truly prefer Academy. I am wondering if I buy the Academy F-86E or F-86F, is there any remodeling I have to do to make it becomes the Mk6 Sabre beside color and decals changes. Thanks.
Hang on… I know that there was a site that explained this… Let me just hunt it down for you…
Okay, here’s the site: http://f-86.tripod.com
One of the Sections explains all the variations of the F-86 Wings. The Canadair Sabre 6 featured a shorter but wider wing (as compared to the original Sabre wing) with slats on the leading edges. Also of note is the fact the the aileron is part of the wing tip. Here’s what it looks like:
You might be able to get away with this if you kit bash an earlier sabre wing… There are some pictures on this site that show different models, 2 of them being canadair sabres. It might give you some ideas. [:D]
Oh, and i love academy models… it’s the perfect balance between price and quality (Though the decals are utter crap)… I’m building the Academy 1:48 F-86F right now! [;)]
You’ll also need to scratchbuild an auxilary air intake just behind the trailing edge of each wing root. The Canadian built Orenda engines that went into all the Canadair build versions needed more air than American engined ones.
This site has a very good photo gallery of Canadair Sabres, they aren’t all MK.6, but some photos show those air intakes I was talking about quite well.

Good luck
If you can, check out the Western Canada Aviation Museum. They have the last Sabre ever built on display in the Pakistan AirFroce colours in which she was last flown. Serial numbver 1816 was the last off the Canadair line.
I claim a modest role in having her returned to Canada. The inspiration came from Larry Milberry’s excellent book on Canadair Sabres and I highly recommend it for you. The WCAM also had the only Canadair Mark 3 Sabre ever built, and it was the restoration of that aircraft that sparked the search for Sabre parts. Sadly the Mark 3 has moved on to another owner, hopefully it will be restored one day.
It was the Mark 3 that appeared as the hangar queen in “The Last Chase”, but the main claim to fame was when Jackie Cochrane flew it to her world records.

Bruce
