Need color specs for Flying Tiger P-40B and Mig-25 Foxbat

Hi all,

This is my first post after some time of reading a lot of the informative posts here. I hope you can help me out with my queries.

I’m building a Monogram 1/48 P-40B and I want to paint it in WWII Flying Tiger AVG colors, but the paint guide does not list the exact shades to be used. For example, it specifies a light blue underside, but I don’t know what kind – is it RLM 65?. I’m also confused because the P-40B box art itself shows the underside as a very light gray, almost off-white. So can someone please be kind enough to educate me in the real colors used in Flying Tiger P-40B’s? As much as possible, aside from the official color name, please indicate them in FS or BS (for RAF colors) numbers so that I can make substitutions when possible. We have a limited selection of paints in the LHS’s I know of here – Tamiya Enamels and Acrylics, Gunze Sangyo Hobby Color and Mr. Color, Academy Enamels, and the occasional Vallejo Model Colors – but no Testor’s MM or Humbrol, etc.

I’m also simultaneously building a Hasegawa 1/72 Mig-25 Foxbat. I’ll be needing the correct shade for Light Gray (over-all color) and Dark Gray (fin fairings and radome). Again, the instructions don’t give the specific shade or closest FS colors. Please provide info about these colors, too.

I’ll appreciate any help you all can give. Thanks in advance.

RK, I can only help you with the Foxbat. For the Light Gray I use Humbrol 166 which matches a British standard, I think BS381C:627 Light Aircraft Gray. I did my MiG-31 in this color and it looks good. For the dark gray I use FS36152. Hope this helps. Oh, and [#welcome]to the forum.[:)]

Another reference for the Humbrol is FS36373 which is close to FS36375 but not as blue.

Can’t write much at the moment because I have to scoot, but here’s some images that may help you with your AVG question, Knight:

Fade to Black…

RK,I can help you with the P-40,Try MM olive drab-fs34087 and MM dark green fs34079 add a little flat black to the dark green to darken just a little more.As for the gray try MM flat gull gray fs36440,you will find that these will match perfectlly to what you are doing. Digger

Bstrump, Digger, many thanks to you two. I’ve had some pressing assignments lately and so I wasn’t able to reply sooner. Regardless, your recommendations are well-appreciated. Sorry to hear, though, that Blackwolf3945 is gone and I don’t know why. I barely knew him but I see that he used to be one of the reference guys here. Sad to hear about Garydmason, too. Anyway, let’s hope we can avert that thing from happening again. Thanks once more.
