What is the best/easiest paint stripper for removing paint from old models, something that will not make the plastic brittle?
Although I have not needed to use the method yet, it is to my understanding that brake fluid does the job.
I now use Simple Green after it was recommended to me by sfcmac. Simply soak the model in it undiluted for anywhere from 1 hour to several days and the paint washes right off afterwards. HTH! [tup]
Simple Green…wow good to know. If I ever have to strip a model I would prefer to use that then brake fluid.
Does that work for all mediums of paint? as in, acrylics and enamels???
Thanks, Jim
I use Easy Off oven cleaner. Spray it on the parts liberally and seal them up in a plastic baggie or tupperware container and let set overnight. In the AM you can wash most of the paint right off. Some stubborn stuff may need a gentle scrubbing w/an old toothbrush as well. I only use enamels and it works great every time.
Here in Canada, I use ‘SUPER CLEAN’ bought at Walmart. It comes in a purple bottle up here. I have heard it called something else down your way. I got the 1 litre spray bottle and the 4 litre/1 gal refil. I bought a cheap plastic container with cover, deep enough to submerge my model and then poured the liquid over the model. I leave it for about a week or so and then use an old toothbrush for cleaning. Sometimes it takes a couple of submerges. It isn’t as harmful as Easy Off and when my model is done I just pour it back in the large container for reuse. So far, no problems, and it cleans both enamel and acryilic paints.
