Need advice on a wash.

Hi guys,

After a loooong abscence from modellibng I am slowly getting back into it. Having never done anything with respect to washes and filters (when I modelled washes were something you did to your face and filters were used on your car) I need some assistance. I got the filter down pat but am having some trouble with the wash. I’m working on Tamiya’s Cromwell (an easy build and one of my favourite tanks) and have painted with enamel. The tank has been coated with two coats of Testors clear gloss and decals have been applied. I was hoping to use an acrylic paint for a wash but am unsure as to what to thin with. I tried to thin it with distilled water but it refuses to flow. The was just pools up and then it’s a pain in the arse to try to wipe it all off without leaving paint spots.

Any ideas or tips? Your help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Greg

Oh, you crazy Canucks…

(kidding)

I found that adding dishwashing detergent in the mix does wonders. My method to the madness is water, add paint to a desired color and darkness (dark grey with some brown, or orange make it look greasy) and add dishwash soap.

I always test first, just to make sure it wipes off easily. When I am happy, I “sloppy paint” it over the model. I used to slop it on, but I found it easier, and less time consuming to go over each line. Not precise and slow, but use a wider brush, and paint away.

When dry, rub with a paper towel, and use a q tip in the hard to access area. Really stubborn areas might need a little water. That is what is great about the soap: it cleans off real easy.

Now, I am not sure who is the member with the true weathering wash. google “Pro Modellers Wash,” and check that out. Made in England, so shipping is a killer, but the wash is amazing.

Hope it helps!

Detergent!!! D’oh!!! I knew I was forgetting something from the mix. Will definitely give it a shot again tonight.

Thanks,

Greg
