Navy Jet question. Heres one for ya Eddie

OK guys Im building my first Navy Jet. An f3h demon. I was wondering what was the sheen of the alerons flaps and elevators. I know they where white on top, but what was the Sheen on the top of the aircraft. Ive heard rumor that they all came from the factory Gloss, and then faded to what ever sheen after time. However in my walkaround book it says they were gloss white on the bottom and Flat gull grey on the top which leaves me the question, what was the sheen on the top of the white parts.

Thanks in advance Trevor M.

Some had stainless steel leading edges. I know the T-28 had them, I’ll have to check on the Demon

Dude, you finally got me.

All of the references that I have and what limited personal knowledge say the entire bottom of the plane and tops of control surfaces were gloss white. That has to be tempered of course with the ravages of time, weather, salt air, etc which tends to make the white more of a satin or semi-gloss.

On aircraft with the gray over white paint jobs, all primary flight control surfaces were gloss white, top and bottom. This would be ailerons, rudder and elevators. On aircraft that had the all moveable horizontal stab the whole stab would be gloss white. The only exception would be stabs expoxed to extreme heat, like the F-4, the inside area would be titianum. Some aircraft had titanium or stainless steel leading edges on the stab.

Thanks Berny13 and everone else. Im going to go with berny13’s oppinion. Scaled down for effect ofcourse. Thanks again. Trevor
