Naval shell 1...Panther tank 0.

its not a 6 pounder gun on a naval ship, its a 6 inch Gun, a lot bigger and it would have come from above down onto the tank[:)]

Yes , this famous Panther . It was knocked out by a Canadian infantryman , with a PIAT, from the Seaforth Highlanders . The tank was then moved out of town , or off the road by engineers and blown up . When I find the link , I’ll send it.

The two-stroke engine in question was used for traversing the turret.I have no idea how large these engines were.

I mean, what’s to say, but that tank’s done, stick a fork in it.
I also noticed the tracks seemed a bit narrow for a Panther.

Something to remember ya treadheads…naval gunfire is some of the the most accurate artillery in the world.

Being a shiphead, I can tell you stories I’ve heard from WW2 vets about their ability to coordinate naval gunfire down to 5 yard increments. You give a set of map coordinates to those plotters onboard a ship, and they can walk shells up and down a road all day long…lucky hit? Probably, but when you have a concentration of vehicles on a road, and the ability to put heavy shells into a concentrated area like a road, and the ability to adjust fire within 5 yards, this is not as far-fetched as it may sound.

A 6-inch naval gun, by the way, has an effective range of about 30,000 yards, or about 17 miles…

You go Jeff! [:D]

I’d love to hear more about this. I remnember hearing a story of 17 Tiger (?) tanks being taken out by naval gunfire as they were massing to counterattack somewhere in Normandy. Anybody got details?
