natural metal finish

I am new to doing nmf ,and was wondering if i could use model master acryl silver with a base coat of gloss black underneth.Has anyone used this before. Thanks for all the input, bill.

I think that should be perfectly all right. However, for a more realistic finish I would use Alclad II lacquers.

I also recommend the Alclad II. If you don’t have airbrush, then I would consider Testors Metalizer which comes in bottles and spray cans.

Nothing can beat Alclad2 for a NMF, but you must apply it with an airbrush.

I used SNJ on this Mustang and the JUG, it too must be airbrushed. If you get the polishing powder that comes in a separate bottle, you can buff your finish to what ever level you wish. I used this to contrast the machine gun panels on the wings. Alclad is also very good, albeit expensive. I was very pleased with the SNJ. A word of caution, the aluminum polishing powder will migrate to areas where you don’t want it, so apply it carefully! The great thing about the SNJ is that you dont have to thin it, it is ready right out of the bottle and dries to the touch within an hour!

Happy NMFing!

Steve

You’re kidding me! Are those models or photo-retouched “real” planes? Crockett, those are truely impressive. I am (was, after seeing those)) building the good ol 'F86 and was going for the fmf. After seeing the results you acheived, I think camo will be a better option. Thanks for sharing(and deflating!)

Hey Roy,

Thanks, but, if it makes you feel better, the P-47 was my first attempt at depicting a realistic NMF! I just got back into the hobby this year after a 10 year hiatus. Back then, Testors silver from a spray can was the extent of my experience. After joining the FSM web site, and taking advantage of the tips from our members, I went for it, and, luckily, i obtained some acceptable results.

I say go for it on the F86!, there is plenty of help out there, heck, if I can do it, anybody can!

Good luck,

Steve

Hi Steve. You’re up early, it’s going on 15h.00 here. Thanks for the encouragement, I need all I can get. I would say you’re being overly modest with the “acceptable” result! It’s stunning. Thanks for sharing and giving me something to aim at. If we don’t connect again, all the best to you and yours for the New Year and a happy and peaceful Christmas. God bless,
Cheers, Roy
