Name Your Favorite Biplane(s)

Optional question: made any models of your choices?

I have a alot, Fokker DRI, Fokker DVII, Sopwith Camel, SE5A, Fokker E.III, Rumpler, Spad and my all time favorite Gloster Sea Gladiator. I have kits of all the aircraft expect for the Rumpler. Edit forgot about the SwordFish love that aircraft and I have a kit of that.

Definitely the Stringbag. Excellent aircraft, in production throughout WWII. Crippled the Bizmark! Attacked Taranto! Destroyed many merchant ships!

One that flys.[:-,][:D][:D]

Grumman F3F series

[#ditto] Some of the best looking biplanes in history.

Two choices:

The Short Bomber: Big, gaingly, and altogether odd looking. Right up my alley!

Ilya Mourmets: See Above! [:D]

It has to be the venerable Stringbag. Not only did she do all those things listed above but (indirectly) brought the US into WW2, sank more enemy shipping than any other and was also used as a nightfighter by the RAF in the Middle East!

  • Grumman Biplanes – not just the F3F * DH-2 – WW1 pusher-prop fighter * Polikarpov Po-2 – WW2 Soviet observation Built a GB waaaaay back in the 1960’s – was that a Monogram kit by any chance – with my brother. Am currently building a KoPro Po-2.

Spad 13. I built the old Revell 1/72 ish kit years ago. The new Eduard 1/72 one looks fantastic, and I’ve got a 1/48 scale Dragon kit in my stash.

My other favorite is the Bristol F2.b Fighter (sometimes called by its post-war nickname of Brisfit; it was called the Biff during WWI). I’ve got the Fantastic Roden 1/72 kit in my stash.

I’m working on the Glencoe 1/74 scale Martin MB-2 bomber. That’s a pretty cool plane too, and I’ve got a Roden 1/72 scale Fokker D.7, which is maybe my third or fourth favorite biplane. [:)]

Regards,

N2S Stearman. Built the Revell 1/72 kit a few times-still have one of those built and a couple more in the pile.

Tiger Moth.

The N2S Stearman gets my vote too.

fokker dr.i, fokker d.vi, fokker d.vii, nieuport 11, nieuport 17
dehavilland dh-2, polikarpov i-15, pt-17 stearman
& that grumman f3f…
have built dr.i, d.vii in 1/72, working on ni-17 in 1/48,
have dh-2 in both scales but the thought of rigging one
of these is scary… cool little a/c tho’…
pt-17 stearman on ‘to-do’ pile…
no kit of i-15 in collection yet, trying 2 decide which
manufacturer’s kit 2 buy. who makes best model in 1/72 ?

Stearman all the way!

Stearman PT-17/N2S hands down. I am amazed that the Brits could produce a 1/32 Tiger Moth – and I’ve built five – in 1/32, but we Yanks don’t have a decent Stearman in 1/48. Imagine the decal possibilities, not only during wartime but airshow aircraft too. I’d build 10 1/48 Stearmans. Just give me thin trailing edges, more than two decal options, a reasonable Lycoming or Continental up front, and I’d clear my bench for them. Are you LISTENING WILLIAMS BROS?

That would be the SV4b for me, without any question.

I do have 4 resin kits (2X 1/72, 2X 1/48) of them.

Just waiting for the right time to start building.

Cheers,

Luc
