Nakajima NK1C Sakae engine

I thought I’d share some progress pics of the 1/24 Trumpeter Rufe kit.

The engine in the kit is a real jewel. It took about eighteen hours to finish. I used mostly Alcad II metallics, along with Model Master Metalizers, and MM enamels. The wiring is copper wire from a speaker cable. This is one DETAILED kit !

Hope you like it so far, and thanks for letting me share it with you !

This one won’t enlarge. Here’s a direct link

that is amazing! [:O] 18 hours on the engine alone, i’ve spent less time on complete kits. Can’t wait to see the whole thing when it’s finished.

Thanks, stoomfluit !

It took that long because the two rows of cylinders are each split down the middle. That REALLY took some time to clean. This engine also has about thirty parts, and they all needed cleaning. Another thing that added time was the painting. Alcad II requires a primer, so some areas have at least four layers of paint.

Glad you like it, and thakks again ! [:I]

Looking good. That’s a lot of time for one radial, but the results are certainly worth it. Almost a shame to glue it in the cowl.

Thanks, Rick !

The cowl is removable, so the only things lost are the fuselage fuel tank & oil tank. These are located behind the Aotake-colored bulkhead, so its not a complete loss. I’ll still paint, wash, & drybrush them.

looks like its ready to start!
I like the heat stress discoloration on the exhaust pipes.

Thanks, obiwan !

The exhausts are MM Metalizer Burnt Iron. It sprays that way right out of the bottle, giving a mixed metallic, black, & red. Its almost like the Three Stooges’ “polka dot” paint ! [(-D]

looks great, will you be able to see it when its done

Looking good so far, Pix!

Thanks, Captain & Brian !

I’ve got the cockpit nearly finished. The wash & drybrush are done, I just need to add a couple of parts. Pics to follow tonight or Monday.

Thanks again !
