My way of scale modeling was a result of unusual conditions. Since childhood I had interest in military hardware and would find models fascinating. Just like any kid I would ask adults to buy me toys or to build some kit (if they were capable of doing it). Later on I tried to get into it myself, but…
…there were three things:
First one is that I didn’t have a permanent residence, so I could not establish anything resembling proper workbench. Having something like an airbrush was simply UNTHINKABLE.
Second is that I couldn’t concentrate on one thing. I was easily distracted by books or TV or going outside and didn’t really research into scale modeling. Assembling an unpainted vehicle or aircraft out of the box from time to time was enough (later on I’ve discovered magazines but mostly read it as entertainment).
Third factor that influenced me was my interest in RTS/tactics. Moving tiny tanks around was fun and all, but I wasn’t at the computer all the time (I remember me and my friends trying to play plasticine Red Alert!) And sometimes I would build cardboard tanks of appropriate size (3-4 centimeters) and plasticine infantry to imitate the battlefield.
This paper and cardboard affair has come a long way from a tube with the wing that I called “B52” and “Tigers” out of colored cardboard (of course it’s a “Tiger” if it’s shaped like a box) to my current paper tank collection.
Until recently I didn’t share much of what I have built. But now I have many pictures and some videos which ironically enough, I’ve never shared with any dedicated modeler community.
