The Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin has a “runner” 251 on display. I suspect that it is a Czech vehicle from the '60’s/'70’s, but its a real trat to see. I’ve always wondered why the Herrenvolk didn’t put power to the front wheels of the 250 and 251. Sure would’ve improved cross-country performance.
Reason for no power to the front wheels was because they were needed for steering only vs, the “traditional” steering method of alternating the track braking on a fully-tracked vehicle. The drive sprockets on the track portion were more than sufficient for the off-road performance needed in the design specs. [;)]
Guess the Master Race figured they didn’t need the enhanced cross-country performance. U.S. half-tracks had front-wheel drive, IIRC.
