I recently restarted a project that I’ve been wanting to do for about 25 years. The project is the Old Light Cruiser from the Task Force Games, “Starfleet Battles”. The ship wasn’t a great ship but I really liked the design and it reminds me of the many hours spent with good friends playing the game.
I started with about four sets of different plans and combined these to come up with a final game plan that captured the spirit of this cool little ship.
I then decided to start with balsa wood as the material to shape the hulls from.
Ah yes, the tough little Fed sublight cruiser that bounced with the old Romulan Warbird in the First Romulan War, strapped on a pair of warp nacelles and became the unsong workhorse of Star Fleet with its specialized variants. [tup]
Woody, 25 years? Hmm, I still have the original TFG pocket edition from 1979. [8D]
Ah a fellow old school SFBer! I still have Commanders I,II,III boxed sets on my game shelf but nobody to play with. My son is almost 12 and has shown a bit of interest but it’s hard for a tabletop game to compete with video games. LOL
Sorry about the lack of updates but me and my wife went out of town for the weekend. I’ll try to get back in the swing of things this week. I’m hoping my 3m acrylic blue putty, I’m waiting on, comes in Tuesday. I wasn’t totally out of the model zone this weekend because I bought some supplies for my next project.
Let’s see…my collection includes the pocket game, the original boxed edition, the three expansions, Commanders 1-3, Introduction to SFB, the Captain’s basic and advanced editions, most of the modules, Federation Space, Federation & Empire, Cadet Training Manual, Early Years, Tournament Manual, Star Fleet Missions, and Star Fleet Battle Force. Haven’t tried Federation Commander yet, but intend to in the near future.
Still have the old TFG miniatures of the Federation CVA, Klingon F5 and Lyran Tiger CA. The Klingon F5 was completed 20 years ago as being in the claws of a young Space Dragon.
Nice collection! I have many fond memories of playing SFB, D&D, Morrow Project, Avlon Hill’s Airforce, and many others. Man am I a geek! LOL
I went to the hobby shop Saturday and picked up styrene for details and making the warp nacelles. I hope to start on the bridge and nacelles today. If nothing else I’ll try to get some picture posted today to show where I’m at.
I’m working on the details of the inboard troughs of the warp nacelles. I’m happier today with the way they are turning out. I hope to have some more pictures soon.
Thank you. [:D] The hull parts are balsa skinned with styrene and the nacelles are telescoping styrene tube smoothed together with 3M Acrylic Blue Putty.
I used to have all the old SFB stuff from the original pocket versions, to the final commanders edition
I also have the Star Fleet Command PC game. It is about as realistic to the board game as you can get.
I play it pretty regularly, and have a blast. You have to allocate energy, load the weapons, all those great things. Also, all the ships from the game are included, and there are a ton of online modifications that you can put into it to make it even better.
It also include P/F’s and fighters, drones, t-bombs, the Kzinti (called Mirak) boarding parties, ECM/ECCM, monsters and more.
You can find it on ebay pretty cheap. I highly reccomend it!!!
richter111, I’ll match your SFC and raise you SFC2: Empires At War, SFC2: Orion Pirates and SFC3.
EAW gives you the Interstellar Concordium, greatly improved equipment and everyone’s favourites: fighters! Plus the races are now in their true territories: no more flying a Gorn and wondering why a Hydran just showed up in your zone. OP pops in with the X-ships.
