My Model Shop WiP

Hello everyone,

I am nearing retirement, and with that I promised my wife we would completely remodel our home before I was fully retired. So we are currently 50% done and making headway to be done by November. I had originally planned on building my model space in the back corner of our garage, but I decided to use a corner of our property to build myself a 18’x18’ model shop / dog house (Thanks for reminding me Carlos LOL)

I have done the work myself to save money. I have the exterior complete. I still need to finish the interior, and I will post progress photos of that. This is where I am currently. Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

The remaining wood that is not painted will be stained and sealed in the coming weekends. The interior will have HVAC, electric, plumbing and wifi / cable.

This is my home…since this photo we have removed the wooden walkway, and replaced it with a brand new one that goes completely around the house and down to my shop. We put 3" to 6" grey river rock between the house and the new walkway. Those are all new windows, roof, front and back porches, cedar siding pressure washed and sealed. We still have a few things to complete outside but we wanted to get the interior stuff done first due to the heat here during the summer months. I’ll post more photos once I am done. This photo was taken from the top of my driveway…it goes down to the right of where I was standing about 700’ then gently bends to the left until it puts you into the parking area.

how hot & cold does it get in the summer & winter? flat ceiling or cathederal ceiling? insulated & if so, where or non-insulated?

Very nice Drifter; looking forward to seeing how you fit it out. I need the Internet in my room back of the ex boat shed, I’m still messing about with boosters.

Cool series of WIP, love those. And nice dog…, I mean man cave [:)]

Hello ddp59,

Summer time temp: Avg 95 degrees with high humidity

Winter time temp: Avg Highs 25 - 30 degrees / Avg Low 5 - 10 degrees

Shop ceiling: cathederal ceiling (Walls and Ceiling will be insulated: R-19 for the walls & R-25 in the ceiling)

Thank you Joe…I’m not sure if your internet provider has it, but my internet company has what they call a “Internet Booster” that helps you receive a signal when you’re not near the main receiver.

P.S. Joe, I googled your location…It is absolutely beautiful where you live. The countryside and then have the ocean right there. Just breath taking sir.

Thank you castelnuovo. My man Stikpusher had to remind me that it could also be used as a “Dog House” LOL [;)]

Very nice, and the house and property look great.

Thank you very much Tojo. I saw your last update photo on your new home and it is very exciting. I can’t wait to see more photos.

Yes sir, that there is what dreams are made of!

oh my!!! Starting from a clean sheet of paper. Unfortunately that’s about all I have, a clean sheet of paper. Jeaulous? You bet. Have fun and careful on that ladder.

Thank you Raulduke

Yeah, I have a thought; when can I move in? It looks like heaven to me. You lucky dog.

Well Bakster anytime…It’s just the wife and I now lol. Our daughters are grown and have their own homes.

Where will you put the still? Love it.

SHHHHHHHHH…that’s something you don’t even tell the other half, ever…Had a good friend who had two set up, as far as I know they are still out there waiting to be found after he passed away. His wife knew he had them (and was ok with it), but not the locations.

Nice project, looking forward to how the inside is fitted out when you get ready to start sanding and painting plastic again.

Seriously though, as an architect I have to think of these things. Looks like it has only one door, understandable with the hill and all. 400 sq. ft. is kind of pushing it for something with only one door.

You should think about what it would take to get out fast if there’s a fire and it blocks your way out. Like an easy open window which you can jump out of.

I’m pretty impressed that you built it yourself. I can remodel a room, but a freestanding structure, I’d probably order one online.

Bill

Meaning you keep a cot in there for those times when you are “in the dog house”.

That is correct Bill, but I will not need one. I haven’t been in the dog house for a very very long time.

Thank you Bill, and thank you for the fire concern. I have already planned on having 3 fire extinguishers for that sole reason. I just have that one door and a 4’x4’ window because of the interior footprint I have drawn out. That is why I will have 3 extinguishers planned.

I have built a good amount of freestanding structures over the years. I really enjoy doing it. The hardest part with this build was getting the post stinglined straight. After I got all the post set in 3 foot holes with concrete I measured everything and was off by an 1/8th of an inch. I’ll take that all day long with the slope of the grade, and 9 post total lol.
