So some of you may remember I mentioned in my Introduction thread about me doing a BF109. My first choice was the F series. I decided to change ideas and build a G-10 plane. Ive been doin a bit of research on them all and theres so many but I liked the G-10 the best and we had it in stock at work.
Sooo I was wondering if the majority of you use either:
The decals supplied with the kit.
Seperate decals like eagle for example.
Airbrush everything.
Ive been lookin around and wanted to find soem more detailed parts for the cockpit and stuff too. Im still gettin used to the site and I am very new to military and planes. So if anyone has some helpful links that would be great. So yea it will be a slow process since I have 2 jobs and am a full time student. But I will record all progress and post in here for some good criticism. Thanks in advance for anyones help.
kool ma 3rd model i built was a bf109 g-10 1/72 revell kit quit easy to build and was also quite fun but i droped it n the wing fell off [:(] im goin to get 3 more of them shourtly wen i finish them ill post the pics of them [:D]ryan[:D]
Looks like a good choice for your first aircraft. I have built a few 109’s myself. One was a Hasegawa 109 E and it was a pleasure to build.
I usually use the decals provided in the kit, unless I have something else in mind. Then I usually go to my spare decal collection.
I usually only airbrush the exterior. I will brush the smaller parts (landing gear, cockpit) but that is just my preference. I am sure others may airbrush everything.
I don’t know what the majority does but here’s what I do.
So far it’s been about half and half for me. If I’ve seen an aftermarket decal sheet reviewed that I like the looks of I’ll spring for the aftermarket. I may also go for aftermarket if I’ve seen the out of the box decals on a build way too many times and I want to do something different. Otherwise, I go with the ones in the box.
My first few models I tried to airbrush nearly everything. Now, not so much. I save the airbrush for the exterior parts and paintbrush nearly 100% of the interior. After some practice, I can do a serviceable enough job on interior parts with a paintbrush that I’d rather skip the setup time for the airbrush.
Psychoblue, any Me-109 is a great choice, be it an F-4,2 or E-3, 4/7 or G-6,10,2, 14… there are just so many variants.
The G-10 you have has real striking camo/mottling effects like a lot of late war Messerschimitts, and the Yellow-5 marking seems like a good match. I’d go with the kit decals- just make sure you settle them down with Micro-set and Micro-sol.
As far as painting, I always like to airbrush all similar colors for efficiency’s sake, so for an Me-109, you’ll probably spray RLM 02 in the cockpit, wheel
bays, struts, and the inside of the “wheel covers” (part you attach strut to). So its not necessarily an interior/exterior question for me. On the exterior though,
definitely airbrush- my brush painting follies always lead me to over-do it and bury the fine recessed panel lines. Happy modeling!
Thanks Bill that was a great help. I also just read swannys luftwaffe painting orders page so that helped as well.
Another question I have is that which paint do most of you guys use? Since I work at HobbyTown I guess I could get anything but what we have in stock are:
Tamiya, Testers, Model Master, Valero, Alclad, and polly S
The RLM numbers are easily noted on the model masters acryl and enamel so I was assuming those were popular. Any other suggestions? I am a Tamiya guy haha since I have been doing cars so long I have stuck with tamiya for quite a while.
I also found a cockpit kit and wheels from Eduards in the system at work. So I think I may try those out as well.
oops that would be Vallejo paint, not velero. Since I didnt hear anything from anyone I went with a few MM paints. Ive enver used them before so wth, why not try something new.
Psychoblue, I typically use Gunze-Sangyo. But if its not available and you’re a Tamiya guy, check the attached IPMS Stockholm page on mix ratios for various manufacturers to get the right RLM colors. Remember to properly thin, and also to lower the air pressure for the light mottling effect.
James, I finished the same kit last month, but went with a set of Eagle Cal decals to create White 44, as below;
I went with the Eduard set to replace the kit pit, but a resin pit would probably have been better. The Eduard wheel well inserts are definitely worth it though, as the kit bays are pretty detail-lite!
All the paint is Gunze acrylic applied with an airbrush.
Hi James, as everyone has said the Hasegawa G-10 is a great kit to start off with, you shouldn’t find too many problems with assembly which just leaves you the fun of painting and weathering.
In answer to your questions, for me:
Mostly I go with AM decals mostly so that I can build something a little different from what is on the box lid.
Most of my decals (not all) come from Aeromaster or Eaglestrike
Yes, I airbrush almost everything except for the small detail parts in the cockpit which I pick out by hand.
If I was you I would build this one box stock and have some fun rather than investing your hard earned on a load of after market. Once you’ve done a few kits then have a look at what resin and etch parts are available.
Aww Mr. Color… like the directions. We have soooo much paint at work. Looks liek I will have to see if we can get this as well. For now I will just go with MM Acryl since its in stock and easily avail.
thanks for the pics KJ awsome job… I will be trying the eduards parts… uhm if u have the part # to the wheel well inserts umentioned. I didnt see those in my system at work. I also ordered a PE set cant remember if it was from Eduards or some other place.
thanks for the tups Darson we carry both AM and ES decals at my work. I was thinking of doing it stock… but the reason i switched to aircraft was to get into details so I think i should be ok. Besides its all learning exp so it will eb fun regardless.
I actually started the model tonight… i will psot a few pics later if its worthy yet. just did small things…
So I have not gotten to a quick start wiht the plane. I have not been able to paint anything do to my paasche being out of comission til I clean out some dried up paint haha.
I have a question tho…
In the directions it asks me to engrave a panel line. I have a testors scribe tool, and I know the sewing needle trick… but the thing is that there is no line there. I have to make my own. How do I make it exactly straight. Tape? Liek Masking tape I guess? Also, should I rescribe the lines already on the plane, just to keep them from disapearing when primering and painting? Ive never painted a plane and these panel lines look so light on this 1/48 scale so yea…
Psycho - you should do fine with the MM acruls and enamels… especially just starting out (especially with RLM) it can be a bit confusing on which paint is which, but MM is farily celar in its labeling… Personally I use the Vallejo and love it but have used MM with good results in the past too!
