I’ve really nothing to add, that hasn’t already been said, except that I’m glad you decided to paint the canopy. That was the finishing touch that this build needed.
Fine build, and welcome to the site!!
PS: watch out for that jwb feller, he’ll lure you to the Dark Side, with talk of Spitfires.
You nailed the canopy framework - I’ve been back into building aircraft for several years now, and that paint job FAR exceeds my canopies [] You should be VERY proud of your work, and I really look forward to seeing MANY more of your builds on here! [bow] !
Katie, for a first, you definately nailed it. Your canopy looks fantastic, as does the airbrushing. What kind of airbrush did you get yourself? I hope you stick around, looks like you’ve got some serious potential here. The key is to build more models! The more you build, the better they get!
The dark side brings you power, and cookies…they really have a bad rep. I figure with how progressive our society is, in 50 - 100 years, there will be no dark and light sides. Just a whole bunch of grey folks that like cookies
My first ever kit was more glue than model and ended up blown to bits by a load of firecrackers (well, to tell truth, most of my early ones did…)
I am re-starting modeling after years of absence and I hope my P-40 turns out as well as your Zero. That old Monogram isnt the best for a beginning effort - the molds were cut back in the 60’s you know. Yet, you managed to get all the rivets and cranky stuff knocked down real well, and the canopy turned out smashing.
Put some warning stripes on the prop and you 'bout got it licked.
I used Daywalker’s old airbrush. I’ll ask him what kind it is next time I see him. He tought me how to use it and mixed the paint. I did the actual painting but it never would have turned out so well w/o his help. I think if I would have had to figure out how to mix the paint and not had someone show me how to adjust the brush it wouldn’t look as good.
Everyone has been so very nice and supportive, I just can’t wait to really get into my Spitfire. Alas, I work retail so it will be January before I can get a good start on it. Thank you everyone for your kind words! I plan to keep building and posting
Oh, if anyone can tell me what I can do with 10,000 Ninja points that would be great?[;)]
The airbrush in question is a Badger 200 single action, and the paints are MM enamels.
Haligan (Katie) is my girlfriend, and after seeing how much fun I have on these forums and working on models decided she wanted to give it a try. First, we tried a snap together but that just wasn’t the same. I bought her the Monogram 1/48 Zero for her birthday, and she was so excited to have a go at it! I explained the general assembly order and how to read the paint call-outs. I also helped choose the general colors, mixed the paint for her, adjusted the airbrush airflow, and that’s it! She assembled everything, did all of the painting, the decals, and final assembly by herself. I am so proud! It has a prominent place in the display case, and I thoroughly enjoy looking at it! She is SOOO excited to work on her Spitfire, especially after reading all of the wonderful comments and advice from all of you. Now, I just have to wait sometimes to get some bench time in! [:D]
Man that sucks, jon just gave me my first 10,000 bonus ninja points a couple days ago. Well I guess they still have sentimental value. Congrats on finding something to do together. I think the next step is children…at least thats how I was instructed things went, now looking back on everything, I think somebody pulled a fast one on me…
Also, a little known fact is that if you use a piece of sprue and hone it to a fine point it can be used to remove the excess paint from the canopy panes. I sometimes will airbrush the interior color of the frames first, followed by the finish color. When it is dry, I would use the sharpened sprue to scrape the paint off of the panes. Since the sprue is no harder than the canopy it will not scratch the surface.
I saw your other post and wanted to check out the Zero. Fine job. I’m glad you decided to do the canopy, makes all the difference. Ironically, I’m working on the Hasegawa Zero. let’s say that yours inspires me and I hope to please the A/C forum Gods one day.
